Editors' Review

With Malwarebytes 3, the respected anti-malware app wants to not only remove malicious software from your phone but serve as its primary defense against malware.

Free or subscription: The free version of Malwarebytes lets you manually scan for malware and then attempt to remove anything malicious, in much the same way the earlier versions of the app worked. With an $11.99 annual subscription, the app can automatically scan apps prior to installation, watch for phishing schemes, and thwart ransomware attacks.

Focus on ransomware: Malwarebytes 3 is designed expressly to defend against ransomware. The company said the app can monitor for ransomware-like activity and then block an attempt to take control of your phone. If ransomware manages to lock your screen, Malwarebytes said its app has a handful of ways to successfully remove ransomware.

Real-time protection: As part of its expanded coverage, Malwarebytes can automatically watch for malicious or unwanted apps, either during or after installation.

Manage privacy: Malwarebytes' new privacy manager can display which privileges you've granted to your apps and display possible security holes in your device settings, with advice on how to close the vulnerability.

Low-stress protection: After setup, the app monitors your phone for trouble without a lot of fuss.

Setup process pushes you to a subscription: While Malwarebytes is available both for free or as a subscription, the setup process steers you to a subscription, with no clear way to just go with the free version. To get to the free version, you can sign up for a trial version and then at the end of 30 days not pay or, with persistence, eventually navigate during setup to the free version.

Lacks independent test results for malware detection: Malwarebytes doesn't submit its Android app for public testing to AV-Test or AV-Comparatives, two independent security and antivirus research firms. The testing firms check Android antivirus apps throughout the year for accuracy of malware detection and usability, periodically publishing their results. With Malwarebytes positioning the latest version of its app as "a more effective and efficient replacement for antivirus on mobile devices," independent testing of the app's ability to detect malicious activity could be useful when evaluating Malwarebytes against other AV apps.

Bottom line

The latest version of Malwarebytes for Android aims to offer full-service protection from malware, with a focus on guarding against ransomware. The app is easy to use and monitors your phone without a lot of fuss. While Malwarebytes holds it place as the go-to app for removing malicious software from your Android device, independent testing of the app's ability to serve as a replacement for a traditional antivirus app would be valuable.
