Editors' review

Macrium Reflect is a program that offers external backup capabilities. It worked very well for us, but novice users might be a little lost with some of the more detailed file settings.

)

The user interface uses colorful command buttons and tabs for easy navigation. We did find a misspelling, which for a paid program, is a pet peeve of ours. But beyond that, we found it extremely easy to add files using the built-in wizard. From there, we were able to select the file types to include or exclude, as well as select the backup location, including a hard disk, network folder, or CD/DVD. As soon as we gave it our permission to do so, the program successfully backed up our selected files to our USB. Likewise, we were able to create a backup image of a hard disk and save it to a DVD. It took a little longer than our first test, but was successful all the same. The program includes a scheduling feature, which simplifies the process even further for the user. The VBScript File and MS-DOS Batch Files generation features might be a little more involved for novices, but the rest of the program's feature are pretty straightforward.

Macrium Reflect comes with an extensive Help menu, and a sufficient 30-day trial period. Despite a few involved features, this backup program reliable performance will appeal to all user levels.

    "Needs Format Feature For Cloning!"

    December 30, 2013   |   By ryserfan

Version: Macrium Reflect 5.2 build 6437

    Pros

Does what it says it will do. Was able to create a Windows bootable recovery disk. Couldn't use any more of the program due to Cons below.

    Cons

In attempting to clone a small HDD to a new, larger HDD, I could not format the new HDD on my computer for some reason. The computer saw the new HDD in BIOS but I had no way to access it from Windows and could therefore, not format the drive. Macrium saw the drive but appears to not have a format function within it (if it's there, my apologies to Macrium). I installed Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0 and there is a format and partition tool right where it should be. Very simple interface and had moved from an 80GB HDD to a 1TB drive within an hour or so.

    Summary

Lots of promise but a format function is sorely needed.

    "Good but ..."

    August 21, 2013   |   By Jboy65

Version: Macrium Reflect 5.2 build 6348

    Pros

    * Comprehensive options, selections from drive down to file level; incremental, differential, and complete backup, even disk imaging for complete protection

    * Painless background operation, low cpu impact

    * Schedule multiple different backups (have one that runs nightly and one that runs weekly, for eg)

    * Keep x-number of backups, deleting those older than that

    Cons

    * Learning curve is a little steep, options so-so explained, could be better in that area

    * If bombs out, you have no way of knowing - I went nearly 2 mos thinking everything was okay (after 2 years of no problems), only to find out that I had zero backups - scary!

    * Uses MS-VSS (virtual shadow copying service) which is probably a great thing, until if like me you encounter a problem which is not able to be rectified using the forum suggestions. I employed every such recommended fix to no avail, only to learn that even if I upgrade, I'll still face the same issue and have no other option but email back & forth until we fix it. Decided to move on at that point, see if there wasn't a better option out there ... still doign that as we speak, as a matter of fact.

    Summary

Very good option overall, just left me hanging is all. Quite a few people seemed to have that same issue I did, but then again, a lot of people don't so, I dunno...wish I could tell you for certain.

    "Excellent Product"

    July 29, 2013   |   By mikewinnick

Version: Macrium Reflect 5.0 build 4694

    Pros

    Fast Install.
    Fast Backup.
Access to Files and Folders on image file flawless.

    Cons

Other than the usual lack of a paper manual, which is endemic in the industry, none.

    Summary

My SSD crashed. I then found out, from Norton, that Ghost did not handle UEFI environments properly. So I recovered the HP Recovery partition, which gives you a 'Day 1' drive, and reinstalled all of my software and backed up data that I was able to copy off the SSD (I could read it but not boot from it). Then I told Reflect to clone the HDD to the SSD. Flawless. Copied my EFI partition, the Windows OS hidden partition, my 'C' partition. Disconnected the HDD, rebooted, and the SSD came up. Reconnected my HDD and rebooted. SSD rebooted fine. I backed up 70 GB in 8 minutes. Then did a restore to make sure it would work, took 20 minutes to restore. No problems. I'm now booting and running off the SSD. Then I bought the paid version so I'd have password protection available. Frankly all I needed was the free version, but for $44 I'd rather support them. If everyone downloads the free version I don't know how they could stay in business.

In short though, great program. I did also try Symantec's System Recovery first since I was used to Ghost, but that was a disaster.

"Fabulous disk image and backup software"

    March 23, 2013   |   By Dazs867

Version: Macrium Reflect 5.1 build 5732

    Pros

    Simple and works flawlessly
    Solid, dependable, and reliable
    Reasonably Priced
Boot-disk in both Windows PE and Linux

    Cons

    After 4 years - None.

    Summary

I've been using the Free version for over 4 years and found it to be a fantastic and reliable program. Install and operation have been smooth and without incident. I liked it so much that 3 years ago I bought the full version and use it as my primary backup program. I initially used the Free version to create backup images of each fresh OS install on each of many of my computers (see my review of the Free version). The Free program worked well as an image and monthly backup program, but I wanted the ability to create weekly incremental backups and to clone so I upgraded to the full version.

The Paid version is a straight forward backup program that allows tailoring each backup routine with scheduling and filtering - full and incremental backups are a breeze to many different mediums. System and File backup routines are clearly identified. Boot disks are available in Linux and Windows PE. Images and Cloning are available. Other programs have lots of unnecessary bells and whistles that get in the way - Macrium Reflect is a straight forward backup and recovery program. It couldn't be easier.

Three years of steady use has convinced me this is a great program that is solid and reliable. I currently have a mix of the Free and Paid versions running on 5 different computers of various ages (XP and W7) - all without incident or problem. It is nice when a program does what it is supposed to. If you can't tell, I like this program and I do recommend both versions - Free and Paid - depending on your needs.
