Editors' Review

This outstanding freeware application makes capturing and editing screenshot images a breeze. MWSnap may come with an uninspired-looking interface, but it gets the job done without hassle. Its useful and very user-friendly features require no special expertise. You can capture a fixed or selected area of your screen, a particular window or menu, or the entire desktop. You can also set the application to automatically save after capturing. Bonus features include an onscreen ruler, a desktop magnifier, a window-information tool, and a color picker. MWSnap also lets you modify images by flipping or rotating them, and by adding a variety of frames and cursor shapes. It's an excellent choice for everyone from casual to experienced users.

"Great except when it locks my system"

July 22, 2015  |  By ElrondPA

 |  Version: MWSnap 3.74

Pros

Easy to precisely select an area (magnifier shows individual pixels where mouse is, and arrow keys can change capture size pixel by pixel). Color picker shows exact color of any pixel on screen. Completely free with no nagging. Some nice editing and image enhancement options.

Cons

Sometimes hangs entire system when restoring or activating it from minimized in system tray. Only works on main monitor with multi-monitor setups. Only holds one image at a time (a second screenshot overwrites the first, though you can autosave all images as they're captured).

Summary

I really wanted to like this, but two complete system hangs in two days is too much.

"Doesn't do what I expected"

February 17, 2013  |  By nickrusso

 |  Version: MWSnap 3.74

Pros

Comes with other tools such as a screen ruler.

Cons

Does not actually copy menus

Summary

Nice package, but I downloaded it so I could take shots of menus. There is no way I can see to pull down a menu and put it in a screenshot.

The menus it grabs are only the MENU BAR, not the actual menu. while the selection by mouse-over is convenient, I can't see as it does this much better than W7's built in Snipping Tool, which I keep in my Launch menu (which I made from an easy-to-get-to folder in My Documents.

I removed it; I didn't need the other tools.

That said, you may want to give it a try if it suits your needs. I had no problems with it.

"Very good software."

July 10, 2011  |  By WSM7

 |  Version: MWSnap 3.74

Pros

Tiny, simple, easy to use. Many options for a free software. You cannot see any effect on RAM consummation. Suprisingly for a good free program, never does the inevitable nagging about buying or upgrading.

Cons

None, may be the interface is a little from Windows95 age.

Summary

Have it.

"Indispensible - Simple and efficient design"

March 11, 2011

 |  Version: MWSnap 3.74

Pros

Installation is simple. Works on 32 bit and 64 Bit. Easy to access and gets the job done.

Cons

Doesn't handle multiple monitors. However, it is a free tool and the ease of use is unmatched.

Summary

My favorite feature is the "Repeat last" feature. It allows you to take multiple snaps of the same area over and over again. This comes in extremely handy when trying to capture WebCast slides and frames.

"Seems useful but a complicated and weak combination."

October 24, 2010  |  By Lailage

 |  Version: MWSnap 3.74

Pros

Capturing options are acceptable.
Based on both capturing and editing images (In fact it's not a pro!).
Not a system memory.
Skimpy at using system memory (9,000 K).
Free.

Cons

Editing options are weak and unnecessary.
Interface is slipshod.
Not fast enough.
Not really easy to use or set the program.

Summary

Using a combination of a simple capturing tool and a talented image editor would be much more effective.
