The name might be LogMeIn, but the motto should be SignMeUp.
The fact that it's free to use for multiple remote PCs, with reasonable monthly plans if you need more--five computers for $20 per month or $200 per year--makes this remote-access program instantly appealing. The program differs from its competitors in that the application runs in your Web browser. If you're running Firefox, it asks to install a plug-in and then opens an emulator of the remote PC in a new window. If you have a lot of tabs open, LogMeIn will slow down your browsing and possibly your CPUs clock speed a bit.
The control window gives you some standard options such as Ctrl-Alt-Del (which kills the connection) and changing the view settings, as well as tabbed access to adjust the connection setting. The 256-bit SSL encryption and dual passwords--one for the program and one for the remote PC's log-in--are welcome protections.
You must upgrade to take advantage of the file transfer and synchronization abilities, but creative users should be able to find ways around that restriction for small files. Still, for the functionality and the price, LogMeIn is an excellent program.

Version: LogMeIn Free 4.0.982
Pros: Free, convenient, plenty of basic features
Cons: Not ideal for LAN only use, remote desktop can be ubclear
Summary: For a free ervice this is a good choice when you are far away from your PC and need to do something specifically related to that PC. The conveniwnce of not needing to install software on any PC you use to connect to the host PC is ideal. Only thin... read more >>

Version: LogMeIn Free 4.0.982
"Free version is ok but wouldn't pay for it"
Pros: Convenient free access - but disconnects regularly. Works great through firewalls, dynamic IP's etc. Used to really love this product and would have raved about it and given 5 stars, until it was "upgraded".
Cons: Unfortunately they did an "upgrade" that stripped features from free and even for paid versions, and then asked for more money to get the features back. Since the upgrade it disconnects regularly.
Summary: If the paid versions didn't disconnect regularly it might be worth paying for this product. I didn't like the way the "upgrade" was rolled out, removing features and asking for more money to get them back, and the upgrade also made the product less... read more >>

Version: LogMeIn Free 4.0.982
Pros: Easy to install and use. Very helpful with a parent who lives a little bit away but often needs help. Log on - see the screen and either direct the person with what to do or do it yourself from a distance.
Cons: Watch the install. You think you are installing the free version but instead install the trial full version. Of course once you use the full version you are not satisfied with the free version.
Summary: Great tool to have and use if you help other or need help yourself. Saves a lot of driving 'over the river and through the woods' to grandpa's house.

Version: LogMeIn Free 4.0.982
"Very happy to have this tool."
Pros: When I just don't understand the problem my son logs on and presto, he finds and explains it to me. It's like teaching a man to fish. So much better than trying to explain problems on the phone.
Cons: I am not qualified to be critical.
Summary: Everyone who is ever called upon to help with a computer snafu could find this a streamlined approach to problem solving.

Version: LogMeIn Free 4.0.982
"Great program for business people that travel."
Pros: Easily connects and allows you to manipulate your computer (or anyone's) as if you were in front of it. Great for troubleshooting issues or just viewing files.
Cons: Computer must be left on and you must upgrade to the paid version in order to transfer files.
Summary: Overall a great program that is easy to use and everyone should have.
