  • Version reviewed: Lavasoft Privacy Toolbox 2009 7.7.0.2

Lavasoft Privacy Toolbox is a powerful tool for encrypting and decrypting files and folders. It performed exactly as promised.

The professional-looking interface features buttons for encryption/decryption, settings, updates, and to purchase a subscription. Theres a tab that appears to be a Help menu, but it's not active. No matter, novice users will appreciate how the program walks you through each process. You can drag and drop files to the desktop icon to automatically encrypt them. It was easy to browse through files and folders via the interface. Once you select a file, you have the option of shredding, deleting, or leaving it. Either way, you have to supply a password. The program successfully encrypted our selected files, and we were able to view the log through the Settings menu. Likewise, we were able to decrypt the same file and access it without any problems.

The self-extracting feature encrypts files to send over the Internet, but you have to send the receiver your password to open the file, which made us a little nervous. It would be better if you could create a separate password to send to the receiver. Still, we found Lavasoft Privacy Toolbox a worthy tool for protecting important documents.
