• Wonderful Light-Weight Icon Creator for Free

  Pros

  A wonderful light-weight, but powerful, icon creator and editor that can do everything the ordinary user may need for producing custom icons. Icon Sushi is an excellent alternative to expensive icon software that are bloated with advanced features that ordinary users wouldn't need. This software works fine in Windows 7 (though I employ XP compatibility mode.)

  Cons

  The Cons are essentially that if you don't understand the software's characteristics and limitations, you may get frustrated. 1. Icon Sushi doesn't actually install on your PC. See summary for install instructions. 2. How the software works is not obvious. Its best features take a moment to discover and learn. 3. The software only accepts correctly sized images in a ratio aspect of 1:1 (but that is the necessary size for creating an icon). So, the software seems to reject images that are not correctly sized for icons (and I think this aspect has caused the negative ratings). 4. Icon Sushi can't resize or crop imported images. But there are plenty of free programs can resize or crop.

  Summary

  INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS: You download the ZIP file. Create a folder called ICON SUSHI. Place the ZIP into a folder and UnZip it. Put the folder into your 'My Documents' folder. Create a shortcut for the EXE file...and put the icon in your Start menu - Programs. The software will open perfectly fine. But, in Windows 7, if the software opens with a 'blurry' appearance, close it...and set it to XP Compatibility Mode (that's a native W7 utility....google it)...and it will open perfectly thereafter.

  Program does not handle large image files. (Smallest I tried was 500x500 px.) Program does not handle PNG images. (Despite the listing of a save to PNG option.) Poor interface. Poor appearance.

  I would not recommend this program as it appears to be very limited in its capabilities.

  It Works!!!! and you don't need to read any directions ...It just works!!!! Step 1 Extract the aicon file Step 2 Select the picture but make sure you have the scroll bar under all files so that it shows everything Step 3 Choose picture Step 4 Save icon and you can use it for ANYTHING INCLUDING DESK ICONS!!!!!

  Pros

  My old Pic2Ico file vanished. This does the same job with no conflict with AVG or Spybot.

  It was simple & direct, produced the desired icons from the .bmps that I wanted to use as replacements for folder iicons. It is SO simple that I cannot explain what it does to do what it does.

  I was able to download and create an icon in just a few minutes. It's great to have icons in a more accessible location than deep within Windows subfiles.
