Two years after the phenomenal success of Halo for the Xbox, Microsoft has finally ported this first-person alien shooter to Windows--just in time to promote the release of Halo 2 for Xbox. In Halo, you control the Master Chief, an enhanced soldier awakened from cryogenic sleep to save humankind from a nasty group of aliens called the Covenant. Although the PC version only adds a few maps and loses the cooperative mode, the impressive graphics, exciting gameplay, and variety of weapons and vehicles make Halo worth a try for any fans of first-person shooters. The demo features two vehicles, a substantive single-player mission, and one multiplayer map that supports up to 16 players on the GameSpy network. Both enemy and friendly intelligence are realistic, and a unique (for two years ago) defense system with rechargeable shields allows for intense firefights that don't permanently cripple the Master Chief. Once learned, the mouse-steering system allows for some fancy driving. The environments look awesome, and a subtle soundtrack enhances the experience. Be warned that the listed system requirements are a bare minimum. Adjusting video settings may be necessary to improve performance on some systems.
Publisher's description
From Microsoft Games :Bent on humankind's extermination, a powerful fellowship of alien races known as the Covenant is wiping out the Earth's fledgling interstellar empire. You and the other surviving defenders of a devastated colony-world make a desperate attempt to lure the alien fleet away from Earth. Shot down and marooned on the ancient ring-world Halo, you begin a guerrilla war against the Covenant. Fight for humanity against an alien onslaught as you race to uncover the mysteries of Halo.

Version: Halo: Combat Evolved
"A Demo of One of the Greatest Shooters Ever Made"
Pros: Who cares about the Xbox and all that "revolutionary" stuff-Halo on PC teh pwnz, big time. The story is awe-inspiring (especially in Halo 2), the graphics are great, the soundtrack is the one good US-made Video Game soundtrack out there, and the gameplay holds some of the best fragging you will ever encounter.
Especially now, that all the servers on Gamespy have been modded so that options are galore. The level they give to you single-player is substantial and will want you craving for more, and the multiplayer was some of the best on the (previously) offline Xbox. Online, it's some of the best time with a virtual gun in your hands you will ever have.
So, get this demo. It will offer a few hours of free entertainment at the least, and at the most it will convince you of something that four million gamers already know: Halo is an amazing franchise.
Cons: Lower-end computers will have to either lower graphic level or not run it at all...but there's the new handy "will it run" button on this page now, so hit it and see what they spit out at you.

Version: Halo: Combat Evolved
"Best FPS w/ Multiplayer mode!"
Pros: Halo is an addicting FPS with one of the best multiplayer modes (very little lag). Even the demo is fun. You hardly notice that it's not the real game. A+!
Cons: When you quit the demo, a video that's a few minutes long plays. (The only way to stop it is to use Alt + F4.)
