The spell checker is one of the great software inventions, saving face (and other bits of anatomy) for countless writers. Conceived as part of another software milestone, the word processor, spelling, and grammar checkers are found anywhere people have access to keyboards and entry fields, but especially in e-mail clients, chat apps, and similar software. Ginger is a free spelling and grammar checker based on concepts like full-sentence context and text-to-pronunciation. This free Web-based tool can help writers improve their skills and produce clear, error-free text, but it's particularly effective for learning English as a second language and helping individuals with dyslexia and similar learning issues improve their writing and communication skills. Ginger is fully compatible with Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as Firefox and other browsers.

Ginger installs locally on your PC, but it also uses Web-based tools, and it requires an active Internet connection to work. Setting up Ginger is easy. When it's running, Ginger places a small button bar centered at the top of the screen; clicking it opens an expanding spell checker panel, or you can press F2 to have Ginger check any open document. Ginger's interface is split horizontally between the text being checked and the same text with recommended changes (if any) highlighted; clicking Approve accepts the changes, or you can simply click away to close the window. The Settings menu accesses features such as our Personal Dictionary; we could also set Ginger as our default spell checker in Word and other apps and access a Web-based Help file, user community, and other resources.

Ginger is easy to configure and use, but first-time users may want to run the program's tutorials. Ginger is capable of creating lessons and quizzes based on your errors -- unlike other spell checkers, which are happy to let you go on making the same mistakes over and over again. Ginger also incorporates specific, unique technology designed to help people with dyslexia, including tools that focus on unusual and phonetic spelling. Ginger's personalized tutor feature analyzes repeated errors, including whole-context errors, and suggests corrections. A premium version is available.

"Crude attempt of grammar checker. Suspicious behaviour."

    May 30, 2014   |   By mo0kid

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

I really don't have anything positive to say about this software.

There was no real explanation of the product, before the Ginger website had kindly decided it was time to download the app and install it for me. The bizarre circular installation window was immovable and intrusive.

    Cons

I didn't really get a chance to use the software properly. I only went on the website to research Ginger, not to actually install it. Unfortunately Ginger had decided to take it to the next level without me really knowing what was going on. Without much of a clue as to how I should use this software I did somehow manage to paste a few paragraphs into an awkwardly sized-fixed window. The results were very unimpressive, only prompting me on a single typo. It had somehow ignored my awful grasp of English grammar.

I briefly saw something about paid subscription, First time it was mentioned

Even if you manage to uninstall this awful software, when you restart your computer it's back! Closer inspection of the Task Manager Start-up tab confirmed my fears; Ginger's install program had been set to go off after every reboot! This to me seems to be extremely bad form, and I'm pretty sure that this would classify Ginger as malware.

    Summary

    Avoid at all costs!

"Intrusive! It embedded code within my site's code RUN!"

    March 24, 2014   |   By SagiLore

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

I corrected a few spelling errors & grammar. However the suggestions weren't always accurate.

It almost does what it is supposed to. Andn perhaps can be used as a back up IF YOU LIKE ADWARE in your PC.

    Cons

Corrects words such as "too and to" unecessarely.

Installs and worse yet-- embeds code that is either malware or adware . Totally unprofessional!

    Summary

I have no idea what this Ginger thing is about, but they have added code to the "code within my website". CRAZYNESS!

    Here is a sample:
    <span class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" id="8f883ec8-b792-433f-a092-c1dbfca*****">mysite's content</span> another word <span class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" id="1d269d7d-b28a-4f3a-a36b-877c7b5f****">
What the heck is this? ID for what? I didn't request any kind of unknown code within my HTML and PHP.
An the list goes on in almost every paragraph. WHAT?
I tried asking these questions on their social media sites but they were either deleted or simply hidden.

I just disabled this add on from Chrome but the embedded code is still within my sites's code. I will restart and check again, if this Cr** is still there. I am reporting them to them to google chorme app's and then the FDC and whoever else I have to. This is adware installed without my conscent is nonsese. Now I have more task of removing this thing. this tremendously.

I am beyond disssapointed and quite pissed, specially because they ignored my questions. What have you got to hide "Ginger"?

I will absolutely NOT RECOMMEND THIS "FREE ADWARE" perhaps malware software.

"It's not perfect, but it is a tool."

    February 14, 2014   |   By LandonParks

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

Catches most general grammar issues, especially those missed by Word 2013's built-in checker.

    Cons

Needs an internet connection to check grammar, Speed of checking depends on your connection speed. The program is somewhat clunky - and when used in-browser I get the occasional 'pop up' from them, prompting me to upgrade to premium (I already pay for basic). Those pop-up's are very annoying as the blank out your entire screen until you click the 'x'. Installation is somewhat of a pain, and takes forever.

    Summary

I'm not sure what many on here are complaining about in regards to the program. I am reading about adware being installed, viruses installed, tearing up peoples computer, etc. I don't work for this company or anything, I just don't support false reviews that make a product look bad - resulting in people who might actually like it NOT taking advantage of it.

I will say that Installation is very, very, very slow. It installs separate programs for browsers and word, etc. It often hangs on installing the Ms Office add-on for a good 30 minutes.

I have NOT, however, found any viruses from the program; nor any adware.

I am an author, and I tend to write really fast. Most of my grammar mistakes are of the more basic sort. Ginger does a GREAT job of catching MOST of these. Not all of them. No. With 100% accuracy it will fix issues with 'were', 'we're', 'where', 'were', 'They're', etc, etc. The reason I make so many of these basic mistakes is because I write so fast, that often times a might miss the 'h' in 'where', and end up with 'were'. It has always caught these issues. Word 2013, on the other hand, only catches maybe 50% of those.

"Best Communication Software Out There Hands Down!"

    December 09, 2013   |   By AdamAtGinger

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

Please note that I work at Ginger and some might say that makes me biased. :) However I am also a professional writer and have worked with most proofreaders out there.

    - Works everywhere I write including text boxes within websites
    - Not your average proofreader Advanced technology behind this baby. Definitely better than Word and Grammarly both in terms of correction accuracy and category coverage.
    - Revolutionary design. Ginger's approach to user interface in its product is truly amazing in that it lets the writer focus on writing while receiving corrections. This is critical as everyone knows how much focus is required to craft a well-written document.
    - Sentence Rephraser feature. There's nothing else out there that provides anything close to this amazing tool. Especially effective for those who lack vocabulary, Sentence Rephraser rephrases user text, adding depth and style that resonates with meaning.

    Cons

We're still working the final bugs out of our product. These issues are reflected in some of the comments here. But please note that we're here, monitoring each and every problem that comes up and trying our best to fix, optimize and perfect our product. We're getting there faster than expected!

    Summary

Doubtlessly the best out there now, and always improving.

"Useless if you are an editor"

    December 07, 2013   |   By UFEditor

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

At first glance, it looks like it would be a good purchase.

    Cons

It doesn't work if you need to track your changes while editing, it turns itself off. It does work however, on websites, of all things - WHY would you want to check spelling on a website that you are looking at, and NOT in a Word document you are editing!? Basically, I paid for a software that is useless to me as an editor. If I can't show my clients my changes, what good is it?

    Summary

    Keep looking. This is useless.

    "Very useful! Unbiased reviewer."

    October 03, 2013   |   By Rachitshah21

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

I installed it after my TA suggested me to visit the learning center for improving my Grammar. I am usually good at English, just that I do not have time to proof read my assignments or projects. I think and write during the same time and before framing the whole sentence. It works the best for me since Ginger corrects me every time I go wrong, and with one click I can get back to writing! It is self adapting and seems to be very well updated. Very useful!

    Cons

I wish it could be implemented on my browser and other writing areas on my laptop.

    "i need to unistall"

    September 25, 2013   |   By GBFandCo

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

    I am extremely unhappy

    Cons

    i can't uninstall

    Summary

I am having the same problem. I didn't realize that the software was being installed. I clicked "get now" but I expected it to take me to another screen. Nothing happened so I thought it wasn't working. Then I notice the proofreading function every time I typed texted on safari. Safari has been extremely slow I believe it's due to this Ginger software. The crazies thing is that on Ginger website. FAQ states it doesn't work on a MAC. But this is inaccurate. If someone can tell me how to unistall this software.

    "Worse than Malware"

    August 17, 2013   |   By TryingAppIsFun

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

It does fix some grammar, just some.

    Cons

grammar: when my writing has "basic clean" it will tell me to change to "basic claim", I already have not much to say. Also it cannot make up its mind, I have a sentence in a paragraph "My computer has problem" and it asks me to change to "My computer has problems" so I changed it, and test the corrected sentence, surprisingly it ask me to change to "My computer has a problem". So, I have nothing to say about grammar correcting power.

Beside the correcting power. I have a lot of things to say.
It installs software without my permission, and the worst thing is the software that they installed will NOT let me to uninstall it. And I cannot disable it as well. Because if I disable it, I cannot install anything to my computer, even updating my driver.

It installed add-on to all of my browser without asking my permission. And what that add-on does is to keep opening new browser and close it instantly, but I am too lazy to chase that. I cannot explain why it does that beside ad fraud.

    Summary

*****Not enough space in Cons field*****
Also, it will add itself into the system services, start-up folder, and system start-up without asking (not even a note).

When that app is on, even though I just leave the app idle. It constantly opens and closes the browser. Again, I don't know why beside ad fraud.

And this software keeps using cpu even the software is idle. I don't know why it has to keep using my cpu. Not a lot but it is very fishy. During the same time I have opened Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Reader, Kmplayer, GOM player, VLC player (yeah! I do that because VLC can play half downloaded movie and perform the best seeking for wmv, GOM for avi, and Kmplayer is a great all around player), Open Office, AMD Vision Center, and Ramdisk. But they don't use my cpu at all if I just let them idle. Even an anti-virus is not running as constant as that software. So why this grammar checker is constantly "running", or what does this software generating?

I know someone who work for this company will question me. Then let me ask you how to uninstall Flexera InstallShield. It is not a MS installsheild, and I check on their website about how to uninstall that software, it said that the software cannot be uninstalled because it will corrupt the system. And manual uninstall is available but use in caution (which means I need to take my own risk). Yeah you may say my computer is already screwed up. But my whole win7 start up consume 1.7gig, I think I am pretty clear about what program is running. Also, only that installshield is sharing the same installed time with ginger grammar. You guys can denial, and my reply would be, "Oh, what a coincidence".

Also, you can blame my computer has a computer virus and that is why my computer is constantly opening and closing up browser. But right after I change all of the addon folder in ginger directory, and remove all the ginger addon from my browser problem is gone. Isn't it is your turn saying "Oh, what a coincidence."?

And CPU usage. You can lie, you can hide, but the usage is on your side. It is under your name! Do I need to say more?

If I fix a computer I really will take time to fix it, I format and reinstall OS only when the windows is completely unfixable (partition problem, or major system file infected), I seldom have the "format is the only solution" feeling. And THANKS for Download.com rated this app as 5 stars so that I do have a good feeling of screwing up my computer. Come on! Even without all the BS about installed an uninstallable software, change your system setting, and change your browser setting. This app should not rated at 5 stars. The looking, the functions of the software if I just stop right there, I would give maybe 3 stars at best. BTW, the floating windows only allow 600 letters of input. Plus the memory usage is consuming more memory than an Open Office (See another fishy part, but I'll let them have this because they can say they use high definition images), and slow generating time (yeah it took about 5 seconds, but 600 letters in 5 seconds? Seriously? I can load a game in 5 seconds). So I definitely will take one star off from there. So without all the crazy stuff it only worth 2 stars AT BEST. Now with the rest of the stuff, too bad I cannot give negative stars or else I will definitely give -5 stars without a second thought.
Ginger! You are lucky that this site can only give 0.5 stars as the lowest.

I'll be honest, I rather have Viking Virus on my computer because at least I can find a way to fix it without hurting my system, and even if it hurt my system, hey! It is a virus. But this, gosh! I have been searching for solution for so long to the point that I am very very upset with this software. I mean, first I found this software change my system start-up and system service setting, I am fine with it because ATI, AMD, Adobe, AVG, Nvidia, IObit, and other major brand or some system software do that (but not start-up folder), even though this is just a grammar checker I still let them have that. And adding add-on to all of my browser without noticing me, I found it is weird but fine! pretend that I am blind! Constantly using my CPU and open/close browser, things start getting ridiculous. And finally found out the extra software that they installed is uninstallable, this is WAY too out of the line. It leave me no way to not say anything. This is not a malware (supposedly), but it acts worse than that.

Just the text above it has 5457 letters in 1009 words. While English is not my fist language, it took me 4 hours to finish this. So the rest of you will know how upset I am. This is costing my OS.

Seriously this is literally the worst software I have ever downloaded in my life. I thought I would get my worst nightmare from illegal software, crack site or porn site. But surprise, surprise, surprise! You will get your nightmare at download.com. Please I NEED an unbiased review. And to the reviewer and ginger publisher, have you try to throw your work into this software? I did throw all the description into the ginger and check. Guess what? LOL.

The rest of you still wanna try this. Good luck. The version I use is 2.7.160.

    Updated on Aug 17, 2013

Why it changes to 1 star after I submit? Isn't it the rule is 0.5 stars to 5 stars? I quadruple checked it! Even the submitted page told me that I give half a star. Why it changes to 1 star? Noooooooooooooo! 1 star is Wayyyyyyy to high! I already am a nice person to give half a star. I cannot be more generous.

    Updated on Aug 18, 2013

Sorry, I have to make another update. It kinda sucks that I cannot edit my review (maybe I just couldn't find it). I made a major mistake on my review. The extra program that they install is NOT uninstallable. I miss the NOT word. My bad.

"Ginger destroyed all of the text on my laptop screen."

    June 03, 2013   |   By Gillian-Gill

Version: Ginger Grammar and Spell Checker 2.7.160

    Pros

Ginger was very good had fixing my grammar & punctuation issues, but the cons out-way the pro's by far.

    Cons

Please read my summery below. Ginger ruined the text on my laptop screen. Ginger made all of the text on my screen to go extremely shaky & unreadable. Not just text that I'd written, but ALL TEXT that appears on my screen!

I have no doubt that Ginger caused this problem because my laptop is new & the problem occurred from the very second that I downloaded the free trial of Ginger. So, I uninstalled Ginger, but the problem didn't go away. All text on my screen is still extremely shaky & unreadable at least 50% 0f the time. At the start the problem occurred about 80% of the time, but it seems to happen less now. Its more like 50% of the time now, ether that or else I've just gotten used to it?!

    My laptop is ruined. :(

Please read my summary below for more information.

    Thank-you!

    Summary

Ginger ruined my laptop. It did work well for grammar & punctuation, but it totally messed up the screen on my Laptop. :( My laptop is new & its a really good laptop. Ginger caused all the text (ie. writing/typed words/anything written/comments/etc) to appear really shaky & unreadable. So, I uninstalled Ginger, but that didn't fix the problem. The writing on my screen is still shaky & unreadable most of the time.

Sometimes it helps if I press the plus (+) button to make the writing on the screen bigger. Then I find the text on the screen is not quite as shaky, but that doesn't always work. Sometimes I move the page up & down quickly with the arrows over & over again. This can help a bit, but after a while the text appears shaky & unreadable again.

I am totally gutted about this, my laptop is ruined. :( So, I uninstalled Ginger thinking this would fix the problem, but it didn't! My friend is extremely knowledgeable about computers, so he double checked & made sure ginger was uninstalled & it was.Yet the shaky unreadable text was still there.

I have no doubt whatsoever that Ginger caused this problem with my laptop. My laptop was new & in PERFECT working order until I installed Ginger, but from the minute I installed Ginger the text on my laptop became really shaky & unreadable.

I will say that the text is not always shaky & unreadable, but at least 50% of the time the problem occurs. It is a total nightmare & I'm gutted that my laptop is ruined.

I wish the problem hadn't occurred because my grammar & punctuation isn't great & Ginger really did help me to check everything that I wrote, but now I've had to uninstall Ginger. 50% of the time I can barely read what is written on my laptop screen.

My advice to people is DON'T download Ginger until Ginger find a solution to this dreadful problem.

P.S. If anyone else had & similar problem & managed to fix it I'd be very grateful for an advice. I downloaded Ginger about three months ago and I uninstalled it after 2 days. So, I've been living with this problem for the last three months. I'd be grateful for any advice. I could sent screen shots of the shaky unreadable test if that would help?

    Thank-you!
