"I love this so much!"
Version: GeekTool 3.0
Pros
It's easy to use.
Cons
You have to go looking around the net to find the codes.
Summary
I thought this was so easy to use, I got my mac not too long ago and I'm trying my best to be as literate with the machine. I checked this site out and GeekTool was on a blog post. At first I had no clue how to use it but then I got it down after looking around the internet. I have the day, month, time, a calendar, but I'm having trouble with the weather, map, news, and pictures I want up, I know I'll get it down eventually. I just have dig deeper I guess, lol.
Anyway I enjoy this a lot and hight recommend this. -
"Long Live GeekTool!!!"

A <b>Huge</b> Thank you to those gallant people who have taken over development of this wonderful little PrefPane!
Version 2.1.2 was working ok under 10.6, but imagine my surprise when i checked to see if there was an update and found this new version, already in 64-bit and working flawlessly under 10.6!!
Thank you again!

Geektool is an indispensable gadget to add bits of information to your desktop. From tailing a log to a dynamic image, Geektool does all. It might be a bit confusing to set up for the first time user, but there's a list of tips and links on the Geektool wiki page to help you get an idea what you can do with this. -

Just using this to tail the system.log. Loaded the new version, and logged out and in, and cannot for the life of me to get it to do what it did in the jaw version.
Love the tool, tynsoe, but this try apparently didn't go. -
"Getting Creaky and Unreliable"

Regardless of what the reviewers directly below say, Geektool shows its age with Tiger.
It crashes on me about every other day.
While troubleshooting a system lock up problem (that I'm not convinced is Geektool's fault, but could be) I found this in my Console log:
-
Dec 7 12:46:53 xxxx /Users/myname/Library/PreferencePanes/GeekTool.prefPane/Contents/Resources/GeekTool.app/Contents/MacOS/GeekTool: The function CGSCreateDictionary is obsolete and will be removed in a Tiger update. Unfortunately, this app, or a library it uses, is using this obsolete function, and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system performance.
With that notice came my final decision to remove it from my system. I came here to see if a newer version was available. -

I'm glad I stumbled across this useful tool! GeekTool 2.1jaw1(D8) is working fine in Tiger. It would be nice to show examples of useful commands for the *nix newbies, like me:
list local volumes and free space: df -H -l
list current processes sorted by CPU usage: ps -axcr -ocommand,%cpu,time,start,pid -U yourusernamehere
time since last boot: uptime
currently playing/shared song in iTunes: lsof -F n -c iTunes -i TCP@`hostname`:3689 | grep 'iTunes Music' | cut -f 7-10 -d '/' -

"Very cool and useful PrefPane, stability though..."
Version: GeekTool 2.1
Summary

This PrefPane is a fantastic idea and as mentioned in the article that first pointed me to it, makes Expose an important tool rather than a wow-your-friends kind of feature. The only issue I've seen thus far is that it frequently dies and you have to re-enable it.
To the previous reviewer mentioning the poor docs about the add-on graphing tool: the images in the screenshots are produced by MRTG and other tools (see MRTG/Nagios/RRDTool/et al) and are just any old picture to GeekTool; just create a group entry of the Picture type and point it to your graphs and you've got it.
So, be aware.
It has been a fun tool to have, but since dashboard I used it less and less. Was this review helpful? (0) (0)
