If you want to make your own games, this is the program to try first. Game Maker installs quickly and launches automatically, starting up by generating a new project. A basic project includes sprites, sounds, background, paths, scripts, data files, time lines, objects, and room features, as well as game information and options, all of which you can configure freely. In particular, the application offers a good deal of control over sprites, which can be scaled, rotated, made partially transparent, and blended with a color. Each feature offers samples to show you how to create your masterpiece. All you need is imagination and the freeware's help file. You might not be able to create something, such as Doom or Heroes of Might and Magic, but mah-jongg and golf are doable. Though writing a game might seem intimidating, Game Maker brings it within reach.

- Very easy to understand and use - A tutorial and three examples for newbies - Many features, especially in Pro (paid) edition - Programming scripts for advanced users

- A newer (but worse, in my opinion) version is available

- Very buggy - No sprites, sounds etc. (unlike Game Maker 8.0) - Often prompts to upgrade to Standard (paid) edition
Summary
If you haven't got a good reason for using version 8.1, install version 8.0 instead. It isn't as buggy and it doesn't spoil your EXE game with watermarks and ads.

Extremely flexible and easy to use. Unlike other similar game-making programs, this one allows you to create your own parameters and resources for games, which means that its only limit is the creativity of the programmer. Plus, it the interface is simple. Other programs have interfaces that can be intimidating and difficult, but this one is nonthreatening and easy to work with.
Cons
Somewhat expensive, although there is a free demo version that gives access to most of the features. Also, map creation can sometimes be frustrating.
Summary
Of all the game making programs I have seen, this has to be my favorite. It is usable by both beginners and advanced users because of its flexibility. I would recommend this program to anybody who is interested in making games.

I have no idea because the program will not install correctly on my system.
Cons
I have had and installed the previous versoon of Game Maker and enjoyed it, so I decided to upgrade to the newest version. After I downloaded the program, and started to install, everything started to go wrong. Several files had problems installing on this program, and now the program will not run at all.
Summary
(continued from the Cons section) I am terribly disappointed with both CNET and the creators of Game Maker. This software doesn't even deserve the rating I have given it in my opinion because of the installation issues I experienced. I have downloaded some pretty good software from CNET download.com, I would honestly like to continue doing just that, but when junk like this program and in CNET download.com, I begin to wonder why I even come here. I do not apologize for my review of this program.

Pros
Make advanced games with drag-and-drop! How good your game is depends on how much time you put into it, NOT your skill level! The lite version is free, and you only need pro if your are a semi-serious programmer. Giant community at yoyogames.com.
Cons
Lite version [this download] is some-what limited when compared to the pro version, but lite is still MORE then enough to make games for fun.
