• Good, but WARNING: installs Bit Coin Miner (mx_oc.dll)

  Pros

  Good little utility, free, nice interface, quick right-click on folders with easy custom color options for your folders.

  Cons

  Update when using the product (2018.04.13) installs a Bit Coin Miner file (mx_oc.dll) in the folder: C:\Program Files\Utilities, which was fortunately caught by Malwarebytes and quarantined.

  Folder Colorizer 2 works smoothly on any Windows computer. To colorize a folder you simply need to right-click on it and select a color. The app is absolutely free to use. There's also no email activation - just download the utility and use it. Developers removed all adware & bloatware in the latest version. Also, you can give up some of your CPU for charitable purposes - but you can skip this option.

  - It does really allow to change color of folders - You can create custom colors - Easy to use

  Cons

  - Unstable. Prone to crashing. - Unless you do custom a install, and are install savvy, it installs crapware. - In spite of Cnet's "clean uninstall" opinion it leaves a lot of stuff in machine. If installation has errors it's impossible to do a clean reinstallation to correct problems.

  Summary

  Folder Colorizer is a mixed bag. It does what it says and it does it with ease and elegance, although it doesn't make possible to use very color there actually is. But hey, there are a lot of them you can use. On the other hand it's full of crapware and the code is not very stable. I've had error dialogs appearing on several installations (I'm using it a couple of years now ) and boy are they annoying. If the installation fails and you get some nasty error windows you won't be able to correct the problem unless you do a manual uninstall and delete every line of code in the registry. Folder Colorizer can be a joy and quite useful or a nuisance, depending on your luck.

  Adds crapware, including a browser hijacker, regardless of whether you check or uncheck the options. Total junkware that should be avoided.

• Works, but ...

  Pros

  Installed on Windows 7, 64-bit: --great idea and it did colorize all folders that I tried, but very slowly, and color didn't always show up until the window was redrawn.

  Cons

  --likeliest cause of frequent Windows Explorer crashes. --definite cause of frequent Word 2007 crashes when trying to save Word files. (When troubleshooting Word crashes, MS suggests that add-ons are the frequent cause. While this is NOT a Word add-on, World evidently uses the Explorer process to navigate while saving, and since the colorized folders show up with their colors, I think Colorizer is the problem.) After removing Colorizer (which for some reason didn't show up in Revo Un-Install, although the Glary Utilities installer found it), Word IMMEDIATELY stopped crashing.

  Summary

  great idea but flawed execution. Might work better on older system software (e.g. Windows XP)?

• Slow & Doesn't Always Work

  Pros

  The custom color picker is great! You can even name your colors so you can keep track of project or customer color codes.

  Cons

  The install process is annoying. The program has stopped working five minutes after I downloaded it.

  Summary

  The file you download here at Cnet is not the program or even an installer for the program. It's a little program that pops open a new browser window (not necessarily the browser you're actually using) and takes you to a web page about Folder Colorizer. At the bottom of that web page is the link to download the actual program. The installation is quick. The first time you try to use Folder Colorizer a box will pop up asking you to give them an email address to activate the program. DON'T uncheck the "send me spam" box. If you do, clicking Activate won't do anything. I was stalled on that for a few minutes before I tried rechecking the box. Wouldn't you know that the Activation went through on the first try after that? The custom color function is brilliant, and I dearly love that you can rename the colors. That adds a whole new level of functionality when you can right click and bring up a list of colors that actually say things like, "New Project Purple" or "Customer Photo Pink". You'll always be able to remember what the colors actually mean! Providing, of course, you can get the folders to turn color. I got exactly one folder to change color, and now the program isn't working anymore. I can right click and call up the Colorizer menu, but when I click on a color, nothing happens. My folders aren't changing color, even after closing and reopening the window. The custom color screen won't load at all anymore. I'm really annoyed that the program has stopped working, because this could be a very brilliant program that would do so much for organizing my files.

  Asks for an email to activate it. No problem, I gave an enemy's email. lol It went through.

  Bundled with tons of malware. Sets off anti-virus. Requires activation. Crashes. Crashes Explorer. No recursive option.

  Summary

  Comes bundled with loads of malware. Gets blocked by antivirus. Then when you try to use it, it requires 'activation'. I'm not giving my email address to a malware peddler. Also, it crashed Explorer the first time I selected it, and crashed itself the next two times. The 'editor' who reviewed it here must have seen a different piece of software to me, because the only safe thing to do with this is to delete it.
