Editors' Note: The Download Now link will prompt a local download of the Firefox extension. To install the extension directly, open the file using your Firefox browser.
Editors' reviewFirefox has many virtues, but speed is not one of them. Fasterfox aims to make everyone's favorite open-source Web browser run more sprightly. Instead of forcing you to dig through obscure config files to tweak your browser's settings, this extension makes the process as easy as selecting one of five options. Using the built-in stopwatch, you can see which preset suits you best. Users with broadband connections will appreciate the prefetching feature, which starts downloading pages before you open them. We didn't notice any spectacular speed increase, but your experience may vary. Fasterfox is easy to install and easy to use, and it certainly won't hurt your performance. Why not give it a try?
Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay. Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with the unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing. A pop-up blocker for pop-ups initiated by Flash plug-ins is also included. Version 2 includes unspecified updates.
