"Way too buggy to even consider buying a serial..."

    Version: FastCut 2.5

    Summary

FastCut is a promising application. But it is still too buggy at this point (definitely not a 2.5 release). User Interfacer is clumsy, not intuitive, and looks like a classic app, or worse, a windows app. Some of its features work by accident, when they even work at all. Very annoying.

    "useless demo"

    September 08, 2004   |   By goalie

    Version: FastCut 1.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It starts to look careless when you see two "Help" columns in the menu bar, and neither of them provides any help. Then you try to start a new "project" to see how the program works, but the demo won't let you do that. Okay, try "Open". Sorry, the demo won't let you do that, either. It doesn't look like you can do ANYTHING in the demo but stare at an empty window. Pfah.

I should have selected "Have not tried" here, because there was nothing there to try, but I did try to try it out.

    "Just out of fun..."

    Version: FastCut 1.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
...I tried it for 15 minutes. Than I visited timesforfun Web site, and realized, since the author himself confested that the software writing isn't his prime ocupation ("I'm writing Macintosh software in my spare time") and because he obviously doesn't have enough time to spare, the very fact that FastCut starts is an achivement and it is a miracle, too.
Now, the program itself... Well, to be palite and not to use any of stronger words,
it is awful, helpless and immature, yet pretentious.
I would strongly recommend Mr. Jakob Weick do gardening in his spare time. And keep the harvest for internal use.

"Very fast, not quite there yet."

    Version: FastCut 1.0.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
"Fast"Cut is right! Apple could learn a thing or two with their slow as heck iMovie 3 or 4. Fast Cut is every bit as fast as Final Cut Pro on my 933 G4 PowerMac. It also features quite a few options, but no effects or whatsoever, a very barebone titler and a "create transition" menu that for some reason failed to create anything (bug?).

The interface isn't very pretty (nor ugly), plain and simple: 3 floating windows, one for your video files, a timeline and a viewer. The application's default is PAL, so if you live in a NTSC country (US, Canada, Japan) you first need to change the preferences. Not a big deal, but the application should warn you on its first start up and ask you what country you are located in.

The timeline is buggy and not very useful. I dragged a clip in it a few milimeters right of the playhead. When I hit play, the viewer just played black "slug" for like 10 seconds and stopped while the timeline's playhead never moved (strange). I also noticed that hitting the space bar in the viewer window plays the clip, but it didn't work in the timeline, so you always have to change windows to playback your project (annoying). Also, no matter where my playhead was in the timeline, hitting play on the viewer started playback from frame 1! To innitiate playback of a certain portion of the clip, you have to first manuallt scroll to it, THEN hit play. If the playhead was already somewhere in the middle of the clip when you added it to th etimeline, it doesn't work (bug).

Another weird behaviour is that I dragged my clip to the left edge of my timeline window, but the clip continued to move left way beyond the left edge of the window and the playhead and the windows' slider did not allow me to scroll any farther left! However when hitting play, the clip would play normally from its first frame (what the?!)

When you add a clip to the timeline, the audio track is not added underit, it is embeded, so no separate edit of the audio track seems possible.

Finally, and this is really weird, I must be spoiled by Final Cut and iMovie when it comes to interface clarity because try as I may for like 20 minutes I NEVER FOUND HOW TO CUT A CLIP!!! There are no tools palattes or icons, all is done through the tool bar menus and there are no "split clip at playhead" style option... Go figure.

All in all, I can't see ANYONE paying 10 EURO (which is like $10 with an attitude) for something as barebone and buggy as this. The idea to provide an ultra fast alternative to iMovie is excellent, but the application is FAR from being useful in its current form. But if the author puts a lot of effort into it and comes out with something more complete and pratical in version 2.0, I'd look into it.
