This is a free 17 meg, excellent program. I ran into the CD jewel case number without reading the comments about that issue here. I went to the home site and saw "When you are asked to enter a serial number, enter the following: 1A752-42184-B74A3-AD752 .

For those who say they need a serial number, CNET provides one, it's just not very visible. Use 1A752-42184-B74A3-AD752.
This software allows you to do all the basic in a very organized fashion. Don't ever use My Heritage, which tries to pass itself off as Family Tree Legends. A toolbar will install that is nearly impossible to remove. -

You need a serial number just to get into the program. This is not free as advertised.
Summary
No restrictions? I downloaded this based on the other reviews. The first thing it does is ask you what type of Internet connection you have. The second thing it demands is the serial number off of the CD case. Since I downloaded this, I obviously didn't have a CD case or serial number. If you click "Cancel", the program ends. There's no way around it. I wish CNET would vet some of these classifications better.

"Good for starters"

Simple to use, uses standard formats, and has a lot of niceties like automatically filling in last names, comparing facts to search for duplicates, etc. It also makes charts and reports that are nice to pass along.
Cons
It starts to get slow as you add more people - my 6500-person family tree has now bogged it down to a crawl. And trying to make those nice charts becomes time-consuming. It won't output charts for me anymore because my family tree is too big.
Summary
It's good for starters - if you're sure your family tree isn't big, or you don't intend to go too far (but believe me, it gets addicting). As you get farther along, you'll want to find something else to upgrade, which shouldn't be too hard because a GEDCOM format they can output to is standard.

This is the 1st & only family tree program my wife & I ever used,but we've used PCs collectively for 40 years & this program is REALLY impressive.We recently found out my family goes back to 1749 & have been able to trace all we find,no restrictions.

There's absolutely NOTHING we don't like about Family Tree Legends. Fantastic program with NO restrictions.The 1 restriction I was expecting was that birth,death,& marriage date fields would be limited to just that,but it's not,so you can make notes!

We recently found that my family in the United States dates back to 1749, before the United States, and found hundreds and hundreds of relatives I and my parents never knew about, so it's been a huge but fun task of cataloging them all for our records for our kids. the simplicity of the program is great, but the fact that it's so thorough and flexible and reliable makes its simplicity that much more amazing. Totally idiot proof, which is great for me in my less mistake free years no :) and I love that you can make notes to follow up in any field you want, even fields that are meant for dates, so you can say what you need to follow up on at some point, or what you think it might be, so you have a range to go by. It's just a great program. Also great is the auto backup feature when on the net, backing up your family tree remotely so it can't be lost and the ability to make a backup save file in the same directory as the original, and I especially love that the file you save your family tree to is one simple file, no others, so you can easily give the entire content of the family tree to anyone else that has the program, in an email, or flash drive or floppy disk, because the file is so small, but still contains everything. Just amazing. Brilliant program. There's nothing I dislike about it, and I love everything about it. Couldn't think of ANYTHING I'd change, not anything. I'm amazed such an awesome program is shareware. Love it.
I forgot to mention also that the program is 100% stable. Using it heavily for 2 weeks now, sometimes when the computer has been on with the program running for many hours in one long session, and the program has NEVER had an error or needed to be shut down. Installation was dirt easy like I said, no errors, not once, and date has NEVER been lost.
