Editors' review

Designed to help late-night computer users save their eyes, F.lux for Mac provides a softer and gentler backlight for the screen by helping the display adapt to the time of the day.

F.lux for Mac functions flawlessly, although we did have some difficulty finding it once we had closed it the first time. Once it is running, the only place it will be accessible is as an icon in the status bar at the top of the screen. It does not show in recently-used apps or the sidebar, and it does not reopen if you click on the icon in Finder. It does allow you to set your own level of brightness and has two options for fade time, but a slide bar for fade time would be a nice addition. On the whole there were no problems with the installation or function of the app, but additional (or easier) access would make it a much better product.

F.lux for Mac offers a great solution for people who work on computers for long hours. Once you get it installed correctly, it will change your screen automatically, and you will probably never know it is there.

"Costs a little RAM...but very worth it!"

    October 19, 2013   |   By shacoca

    Version: F.lux 23.0

    Pros

    Works as advertised!

    Cons

You'll sacrifice some RAM. Of course, you can always turn it off if other memory intensive apps complain.

    Summary

A little memory hit is worth the benefit of this wonderful little app.

    "Works great on Macbook Retina"

    May 12, 2013   |   By gurnx

    Version: F.lux 21.0

    Pros

    Works well. Easy to configure.

    Cons

No version-numbered downloads. Developer's site doesn't list release notes

    Summary

Easy to install & configure. Developer's site is quite informative about app configuration, there's lots more science to eye-strain than I realized. Apple's Macbook Retina display quality doesn't 'tire' my eyes as do normal displays so an app like this is quite helpful. Thanks for the app, it's nicely done.

In the future I hope the developer will make available some version-release notes and perhaps an 'advanced' feature set (allow multiple-monitor individual setup, auto-quit during morning hours, etc.)

    Version: F.lux 13.0

Softens the screen light for nighttime use.
Easy to change the location settings, as long as you have a good Internet connection.
Easy to adjust the amount of color correction.

"Works as Advertised ... With Caveats"

    February 24, 2011   |   By Dominick

    Version: F.lux 11.0

    Pros

I almost like the more subdued screen than the original LED.

    Cons

If attempting to project through PowerPoint or other software through a projector, the projected image slightly pulses. Especially in my night class. Had to turn F.Lux off as students objected to image problem. Same for LED TV use.

    Summary

Great for personal use. Bad for any "video out" output at night (Projectors, TVs, etc).

"Great program, it's so much easier on my eyes."

    January 25, 2011   |   By PaulStanly99

    Version: F.lux 5.0

    Pros

As soon as I installed it in the evening, I immediately noticed a huge difference as the strain on my eyes immediately decreased.

    Cons

    None at the moment.

    Summary

Great product! Works wonders and makes evening computer use more enjoyable with less strain on the eyes.

Also, seeing as artificial light sources in the evening prevents your body from producing melatonin properly, I believe this mitigates some of the issues.

    "Reduces eye strain"

    October 01, 2010   |   By trlamb

    Version: F.lux 5.0

    Pros

Easy to set. Just give it your zip code and choose your evening lighting preferences.

    Cons

The default evening setting (3400K) is too pink with bright white (3500K) light bulbs. Maybe it's ok with soft white (2700K) bulbs.

    Summary

I reset the nighttime lighting from 3400K to 5400K because I use color-corrected light bulbs (3500K and 5000K) instead of the standard 2700K bulbs. 5400K is noticeably easier on my eyes at night than the computer's standard 6500K. I left the daytime lighting at 6500K.
