CNET Editors' review
Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix provides a series of tools for taking SWF movies, editing them, and converting them into Flash files. While it offers an impressive collection of controls, it certainly isn't for everyone.
The program's interface is intimidating, mostly because it's formed out of several small windows working together. The windows display file trees, images, and other tools. Eltima includes an educational video tutorial, but the video might scare off novice users with its tech-heavy talk. After some study, we were able to open up a Shockwave video (.swf file) and extrapolate all the pieces that make it up, such as text, buttons, sound, and images. This process took several minutes for only a few minutes of film, a major disappointment. However, we were impressed with how much we could edit the finished file. You can change text within the movie, change colors, edit photos and sounds, etc., with a few simple tools that take only a little practice to master. Etima offers few special features, though the screenshot-making option does provide a neat way to document your work. Overall, the program delivers, but it requires some serious study or prior knowledge to successfully navigate its busy front end. Regardless of such difficulties, we were able to successfully edit our movie and convert it into a Flash-ready file.
Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix leaves a watermark on output during trial. While it provides exciting tools, it's reserved for serious Flash fans only. However, we still recommend it.
Publisher's Description
From Eltima Software:
Flash Decompiler Trillix is a powerful SWF to FLA converter that will help you decompile Flash movies, convert SWF elements into multiple formats and edit SWF movies without Flash Studio installed. Flash Decompiler completely supports Flash 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Flash CS4 (10) and Flash CS5 and CS5.5, including AS 2.0 and 3.0 as well as Flex. With an ease of one click you can extract SWF elements: sounds, images, videos, shapes, frames, morphs, fonts, texts, buttons, sprites and ActionScripts from any SWF file directly to your hard drive.
Flash Decompiler supports batch conversion mode. You can simply leave several files to be converted and go have a cup of coffee while Flash Decompiler is working. More than that Version 5.0 features multi-window interface with a possibility to work with and compare several SWF files at a time, and Dump View, which shows the detailed tag structure of a SWF file.
Trial Limitations: The resulting FLA files will be stored in grayscale format only; The resulting FLA file will have nag watermark layer; ActionScript is not included in the resulting FLA and Flex project.
What's new in this version:
- Added: decompilation of SWF files embedded into a SWF file as binary data (nested SWF files)
- Added: basic conversion of SWF files with a standard Flash preloader (e.g. files with TLF texts)
- Added: Adobe Flash Professional CS 5.5 support
- Update: since this version Flash Decompiler Trillix doesn't support Windows 2000

"DON'T UPGRADE! It'll disable the software!"
Version: Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix 5.2.1160
Pros
Decompiles Flash Quickly?
Cons
Actionscript is somewhat hard (expected for a decompiler).
My biggest problem is the support: I tried to update it via the menu and it disabled the software. Tech support says it's my problem and hasn't helped.Summary
It worked fine until I tried to update it. Now I spent the money on software that won't work. It's been a week since I originally complained and am getting the runaround,
quote:
According to our purchase policy all registered users can download free upgrades within the major version. All further upgrades can be purchased with 50% discount. This can be derived from Eltima Upgrade policy page
I just want it to work again and it's taken too much effort. I've called, emailed and filled out their online forms.
Go with another company - They all offer the same product (flash decompiler) but OTHERS will hopefully NOT disable your software for clicking on "update" after you've paid good money.
Just my opinion after dealing with customer service this week! -

"Almost worked, but did not preserve Flash 8 filters"
Version: Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix 4.1.0.71
Pros
Like how the browser lets you inspect individual elements within the SWF.
Cons
Does not seem to preserve the use of filters (Flash 8+)
Summary
Saved me a lot of work from recreating the FLA from scratch, but I still had to redo all of the filter effects after decompiling the SWFs to FLAs (version 8 FLAs). Also, some dynamic text fields lost their formatting - while other text fields came out fine. After decompiling from SWF to FLA and making a simple text edit to the FLA, then publishing back to SWF, the file size of the new SWF ended up about 25% larger than the original SWF. It's not perfect - don't expect a perfect decompile, as you will need to do some (or a lot) of tweaking to the resulting FLA depending on its complexity.

"Works better than the others I tried"
Version: Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix 4.1.0.71
Pros
This has a great interface, easy to use, and works perfectly. I was able to open a SWF that had external AS, several imported classes, and it worked without a flaw. Everything was named understandably, the script was clean, and I'm very happy.
Cons
I wasn't clear on the limitations for the demo version. The demo exported all the imagery as black and white and didn't export actionscript. But it was the only thing that worked.
Summary
This software saved my bacon, and I tried 3 others with no success until I found this one. it's worth the $80!
-
"Really fast and smart software!"
Version: Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix 4.1.0.71
Pros
works great even in trial version. It exports the whole movie in FLA and also extract several elements from a Flash. Works with CS4 - impressive!
Cons
didn't find any
-
"Crashes Flash"
Version: Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix 4.1.0.71
Pros
None - the FLA files it creates cause Flash to crash.
Cons
After running a SWF through this decompiler, the resulting FLA file crashes Flash as soon as I try to open the file.
Summary
Not sure of the value of this software if I can't use the decompiled FLA files ??

"Looked promising, BUT..."
Version: Eltima Flash Decompiler Trillix 4.0.0.700
Pros
Displays all of the elements within a SWF
Cons
Resulting FLA crashes my Flash
Summary
I was trying to recover the source for my SWF and I thought this app would do the trick. It looked promising when this app was able to open my SWF and display all of the elements in the library. But when this program exports the SWF to FLA, the resulting FLA file crashes Flash when I try to open it. I found another decompiler on Download.com that can create FLA's that I am able to open and edit. I suppose you could use this program to extract individual elements from a swf file, and use those parts to manually reconstruct the FLA in Flash - but it would be a lot of work for complex animations.
