CNET Editors' review
Good backup utilities that combine maximum user friendliness with excellent functionality and some helpful extras take the chore out of an essential duty. When all that comes for free, the excuse to blow off backups wears thin. Easeus Todo Backup is just such a free backup and restore utility. Like any good backup tool, it will back up your entire system's current state, data, settings and all, or just what you want it to, including partitions or full disks, and restore your computer in the event of a hard-disk crash or other calamity. Its Disk Cloning feature will help you migrate your operating system and data to a new hard disk when it's time to replace the old one. You can also use it to create bootable CD-ROMs using either Linux or the powerful Windows Pre-installation Environment (PE), which is a big improvement over MS-DOS.
Two things set Todo Backup apart from many other backup utilities (three things, if you count that it's free): its easy-to-use interface and its wizard-based operation. Colorful, large, clearly labeled buttons and icons make it easy for even new computer owners to use, a big plus because they need protection the most yet are usually inexperienced at securing it. The program walks users through its operations and explains each step with detailed instructions, augmented by a good Help file for further assistance.
Todo Backup is freeware and is certified for Windows 7. It downloads as a compressed file but extracts, installs, and opens without fuss.

"Worked great to clone a drive"
Version: EaseUS Todo Backup Free 5.8
Pros
Fast, Easy to work with, will backup to my NAS, and with the management software, I can backup my wife's computer and laptop, without her having to touch anything. Can clone a standard drive to a SSD, and optimize it for windows, just a great feature.
Cons
None that I can think of.
-

- Very accurate Backup and Restore
- Pre OSCons
None I can think of
Summary
System Crashes do not scare me easily; actually, after Easeus ToDo Backup, they do not scare me at all. BSODs smile at every man, and all a man can do is smile back. And a man can smile back only with Easeus ToDo Backup tucked away in his toolkit :D
System crashes are irritatingly frequent for me. Somehow, I always manage to find that one wire holding Windows together, and yank it as hard as I can producing a nice, blue screen with white letters in Lucida Console font.
To restore sanity to my system, I had been using a version of RestoreIT which was shipped along with my HDD. It used to do the job, but had limited functionality as it was a free version.
I needed a better program, so, I had been going through a lot of backup software and finally stopped when I found Easeus.
Easeus ToDo Backup is probably the best backup software for an average home user like me. It is very user friendly and does extremely accurate restores. Featurewise, it does all I would ever need.
You can opt for 3 types of backups i.e. Disk/Partition, System and File. And you can backup to either a folder on your HDD or an external drive. You can compress the backup file, split it to configurable pieces and also specify the transfer rate. For Recovery, again, you have the 3 options of Disk/Partition, System and File. There is a Management module for managing your backups and tools for Cloning, Check Disk, Create Bootable, Date Wipe, Mount/Unmount and Enable/Disable PreOS.
The PreOS is probably the best feature of the software. It is a module that runs before Windows loads (displayed as an option in the list of OSs when you boot up), and you can do a backup or restore here as well . This is a life saver as plenty of times, a system crash prevents Windows from loading. In such an instance, you can load the PreOS instead of Windows and restore one of your backups.
Easeus ToDo Backup has saved my bacon countless times since I installed it around a year back. It has ALWAYS taken accurate backups and ALWAYS restored my backups as and when I needed with remarkable accuracy. It is reasonably fast, extremely reliable, extremely accurate, and, is a pleasure to use.
I now hoot with laughter every time I see a BSOD. Get Easeus if you want to do the same :D -
"Restore system to new disk works great!"
Version: EaseUS Todo Backup Free 5.8
Pros
40gig system partition, backup well! Restore only took 20 minutes and boot from new disk perfectly!
Cons
Spend about 4 minutes to load the boot CD. Too slow!
Summary
Need improvement for the GUI loading speed.

"It Appears to Work on Win8"
Version: EaseUS Todo Backup Free 5.8
Pros
It appears to work on Win8
Easy to setup, but somewhat intolerant of remembering removable drives.Cons
Messages are for a techie - not folders but partitions. Not even C;, etc.
Summary
A functional backup that is well beyond Microsoft's crap "solution". The real proof will be if and when I need to reimage my drive.
-
"Intuitive, simple to use, stable and reliable, perfect!"
Version: EaseUS Todo Backup Free 5.8
Pros
Easy to backup and restore. I have tested most of the functions including full system recovery and everything works perfectly for me. Very intuitive and excellent help files incorporated.
Cons
Nothing of significance.
Summary
EaseUS Todo Backup is a breath of fresh air after I have experienced years of frustration and unreliability with Acronis True Image. ETB is totally satisfactory in every respect and I am a heavy user running all my home IT requirements e.g. banking, databases, music library, photo and video presentations etc.etc. I am absolutely delighted, feel more secure than ever before, and now using ETB on all three of my home machines.
Answer to Fred Bart. The system recovery was using FREE 5.8 version and a boot CD created with previous FREE 5.6 version. I have also done test data recoveries from sytem, partition and file backups. All worked successfully. Based on my recent experience I would thoroughly recommend Easus Todo Backup.

"Run and do the job smoothly!"
Version: EaseUS Todo Backup Free 5.8

Cons

Summary
Good software. But need to improve support on Windows 8.

"Failed to back up then corrupted a hard drive"
Version: EaseUS Todo Backup Free 5.8
Pros
Easy to install.
Cons
Didn't work. Destination hard drive was left with an inaccessable folder that couldn't even be deleted without formatting the drive.
Summary
I installed this and tried to back up a folder from one external hard drive to another. I got an error message telling the folder couldn't be backed up. That's very strange since I have been backing it up with Windows Explorer.
When I checked the destination drive there was a new folder there for the backup. I couldn't open the folder or even delete it. I had to reformat the drive to get rid of it.
I uninstalled the software and it told me I needed to reboot to completely remove it. I gave it permission to do the reboot and the computer froze. I had to reboot with the power button. -
"Easy To Use - Take Care When Setting Up !"
Version: EaseUS Todo Backup Free 5.8
Pros
Probably the easiest to use free software out there. Fairly versatile, depending on your needs. I haven't have to do a recovery, so I can't speak to that. I like the fact that it can do a full system backup and save some programs and files I wouldn't want to have to replace.
Cons
For some inexplicable reason, during installation the program will try to set your target (destination) as a folder on your C:\ drive, so pay particular attention to this phase. When I installed it on another computer with a partitioned external hard drive (E:\ & F:), with both partitions empty, it set the F: drive as the destination. Since that drive had more space than the E: drive, it leads me to think that the program defaults to the drive with the most space, but it's just a guess. I easily set it to the E: drive and it worked fine. As to the publisher's comments that it will do differential/incremental backups, that has not been my experience with v 5.5. Each full system backup sits alongside the previous one, but it may just be that I haven't figured it out yet. (To be honest, I've been a little lazy - it's just so easy to run another full system backup, but I'm going to read the tutorial eventually - I promise.)
Summary
Having given up on Windows 7 glitchy and unreliable backup program, my research kept coming back to EasUS Todo as the best free backup software available. I used Macrium Reflect for a time, and it's quite good, but the free version only does disk images and clones. Plus it's trickier to use. At this point, I have to say I'm quite happy with EaseUS and , with the above mentioned quirks in mind, highly recommend it to one and all.
