    "Rip off of Half Life"

    November 19, 2004  |

Version: Doom 3 E3 2003 trailer (high resolution)

    Summary

Mr. Hat you are on crack. Just because Doom was about Hell and Doom 3 is about hell doesn't mean that Doom 3 isn't ripping off half life. The entire concept of teleportation and using an intervening land (hell in this case instead of the alien planet) came from half life. As did the little segments where you see the other people moving around but you can't affect them (read CIA guy) and even the introduction to Doom 3 which *gasp* has you riding into the scientific compound on a train and resembles black mesa in every way except that its on mars intead of secluded on earth, oh and lets not forget that its SMALLER and DARKER.

Having played Doom 3 to completion and playing Half Life 2 right now I can honestly say if you have to pick one don't buy Doom 3. It's utter garbage. As mentioned above the plot is a weak adaption of the origional Doom storyline to the Half Life I plot. Half Life II comes with a brand new storyline.

I found the game play in Doom 3 to be mainly artificially created suspense. secret doors open to have monsters attack you. Demons teleport in behind you. There is no use of audio made to reveal where creatuers are and let you use your hearing since they are pretty much always behind you.

So far I've literally been on the edge of my seat playing HL2 as it naturally and immersively keeps you in suspense while using its phenenomal audio to allow your EARS to track critters coming toward you rather then just making them appear wherever you aren't.

Anyone who has played any of the ID products knows that they have absolutely no idea how to create an actual storyline. The origional concept was weak at best and neither Quake nor any of the Dooms improved on it. That isn't to say that they weren't fine games that revolutioned things at the time.

Note I'm note including Doom 3. Doom 3 is a set of pretty graphics that are dimmed down and placed in enclosed spaces because they used extremely high textures rather then an actual decent game engine. The game can't handle more then one or two of the highly detailed monsters on the screen at a time and the rooms wouldn't be big enough to fit them in if it did. I can't think of more then one or two areas in the entire game that were even fairly wide open except for the boss at the end and even that only has three critters at a time (and is ridiculously easy I might add). I've had a harder time on normal playing sequences in HL2 on Normal then I did in Doom 3.

Half Life 2 on the other hand is Even better then the Origioanl Half Life which taken for game play and not graphics is better then Doom 3 by it self.

Half Life 2 has phenomenal graphics as well HUGE vast open spaces. Vehicles. Tons of *DIFFERENT* weapons (Doom 3 only has the Soul Cube the rest are recycled garbage) Brand new concepts and ideas, non stop edge of the seat game play that is actually draining and *gasp* something ID has never done....... A STORYLINE!!!!!! Not only do they have a s *gasp* storyline. But its an actual believable and *gasp* interesting continuation of the FIRST storyline whch was *gasp* interesting and believable. Doom 3 has nothing to build on because there never was a storyline and Doom 3 itself is no exception.

    To sum up.

If you want a game that is stunningly origional and whatever else these fanboy hacks claim doom 3 is then get Half Life 2. If you are such a huge doom fanatic that you'd rather play Doom 2 with better graphics and the storyline from Half Life then by all means waste $50.

Feel free to IM me at my handle if you think I'm full of it or just a Doom hater. I'll be more then happy to tell you how much time i spent playing Doom and the variations and how i'm utterly disappointed that ID let themselves be embarassed in this way.

    "The Return of The King"

    August 1, 2004  |

Version: Doom 3 E3 2003 trailer (high resolution)

    Summary

It was hard to imagine a gaming world having a first-person shooter concept before 1993 until "id Software" invented the mother of all first-person shooters, Doom. The template for Doom was found in id's Wolfenstein 3D which John Carmack and John Romero created as an introduction to its genre that was a dream about to come true for them at that time. The point is to understand the impact of Doom you have to realize that it not only redefined the way games were made, but the way they were played. The simplest definition of Doom in Romero and Carmack's dictionary was: "Wolfenstein 3D + Horror", not forgetting that the idea of Deathmatch (the word itself was coined by Romero) was invented and applied first in Doom, plus the shotgun weapon. Now, id Software (Doom 1993, Quake 1996 and Return To Castle Wolfenstein 2001) is about to let Doom 3 shine in the world of first-person shooters aiming to reclaim its position at the top of the genre and to be the most terrifying game of the year with terrifyingly mutated creatures that will shuffle, swarm, gallop, tear, shred and shoot. Imagine players reaching massive areas of darkness and trapped in pitch-black with only the muzzle-flash of their own weapon for light while assaulted from all sides by those creatures!! As most of you know, Doom 3 will be released on PC and Xbox by the end of the year 2004 and my message (consider it as alert!) goes to those who're willing to get the PC version of the game, technically, this masterpiece needs a supreme machine that allows a large drain on the CPU, displays highly-accelerated graphics and massive amount of colors. This means that you'll have to spend more pennies in order to run the game just as id Software wants it to be. Therefore, latest GPU in the market is highly recommended such as the new NVIDIA GeForce 6 series (the new GeForce 6800 Ultra is the industry favorite and most recommended GPU running latest games just the way creators intended). On the other hand, bad news goes to Xbox owners who're comparing with the PC version while not suffering from the problem of system requirements, and with the added bonus of built-in Dolby Digital, the Xbox version is being tweaked massively to help the machine process the mass of graphics data that needs to be translated from the PC. But we can't deny that it will be mostly the perfect version of Doom 3 on a home console especially as powerful as Xbox if it's out on all other consoles (some famous developers for multi-consoles admitted that some of currently Xbox titles can't work on any other home consoles available now!!). In the end, I may have praised Doom 3 more than it deserves but I was sure that all of the original Doom fans around the world understood clearly how much she gave to the industry and how much the first-person shooter games owe her. For me writing some kind of preview for the first time, I was consuming the legendary part of the original Doom for the benefit of Doom 3 depending on what id Software said about considering Doom 3 as a remake of the original Doom following the same story line since it isn't a new game in the series. That reminds us of the remake role of Resident Evil on the GameCube which has been about 70% renewed, but problem is that the two genius developers behind the original Doom (Carmack and Romero) won't combine their energies once more this time. Let's just hope that the game that started it all can still prove to be the leader of all first-person shooters, because during the time when Doom was resting, a group of well-designed first-person shooters had surrounded her and I can't skip to mention the marvelous and perfect Metroid Prime on GameCube that went out surprisengly changing its genre from platformer to complex first-person shooter (combined with an intelligent third-person adventure) having almost completed 100% factors of the genre and revolutionary stratigical, technical, well-designed and oversight elements forming an ARTFUL MASTERPIECE that will remain as a genuine guide to upcoming first-person shooters...

    "Simply awesome"

Version: Doom 3 E3 2003 trailer (high resolution)

    Summary

This is not only a revolutionary graphics engine, it is a reincarnation of the mother of all first-person shooters.
    -P.S.
-For those of you who (obviously) don't know, DOOM III follows the same plot as the original DOOM, a game which was on the market before even the concept of Half-Life existed. I think someone has their rip-off flow chart upside down.

From the trailer the plot look the be exactly that of Half-Life.
Don't get me wrong, it does seem that they have improved on he engine. However, will it fair against the sequel to Half-Life?
