Editors' Review

Despite its fun name and happy colors, Parse-O-Matic Free Edition is not a friendly, automated file conversion tool. Parse-O-Matic is a tool for programmers who want to make complex changes to a file and want to learn a new scripting language to do so.

Luckily, the language itself is straightforward and supports conventions such as arrays and regular expressions. It also offers many ways to find, compare, and alter data, including the capability to compare strings, numbers, lengths, and patterns. Parse-O-Matic comes with an enormous, detailed user manual in addition to many example scripts, from simple to advanced. Once you get the hang of writing POM scripts, you will probably be very pleased with the breadth of the input and output formats this program supports. You can input text and hex files as well as data from the Windows Clipboard. Supported output formats include CSV files, HTML and XML, the Clipboard, and many others. A log file keeps track of the conversions you perform. The Parse-O-Matic interface is plain but functional, allowing you to load a file and a script and to designate an output file. All of the magic happens in the scripting, however; for assistance, look to the program's Help file as well as the detailed instructional manual, which clocks in at more than 100 pages.

To access the Parse-O-Matic Free Edition, you must first register and obtain a trial code. The Free Edition does not support some Advanced scripting commands. The program is a powerful data-processing utility, but only experienced programmers--or those eager to learn--will be able to use this program in any meaningful way.

"It's a really powerful tool for dealing with text files"

Quite all the function you could think of for managing text files, even source code.
Very fast, since the scripts are compiled in background (witha good disgnostic) and then run.
Has a straightforward logic in file management (like RPG's approach): every file you pass it is scanned, and you could do some pre- and pos- processors.
It could use indexed keyed files and in its latest version, even database.
I could deal with EBCDIC and ASCII files, and you could build true "application" with it.
Powerful log and msg management. It could be run by batch commands and for massive file editing.
I make even business with Parse-O-Matic (converting and migrating codes and files), and it works very fine

Needs time to learn the proprietary language, even he manual is very well written
The databases interface is rather poor, and the connection is only thru ODBC
The free version has only a small subset of the available functions
Quite expensive for full version (but you could do business with it)

One of the best text tool I've ever used: powerful, fast, reliable, well documented.

"Free trial is very nice - but product is too expensive"

- Did a decent job parsing a file with mixed (text/binary) content
- Free trial identified the features that weren't "free", to make it easier to determine what the final price would be if you decided to purchase
- Sample parse scripts included with the product make it possible to use them as a starting point to your own scripts (also see "Cons")

- The program should have the ability to either determine, or be told, what type of data file is being analyzed (i.e. what program CREATED the data), so that it would have additional capabilities to analyze certain fields
- Unable to process "currency" fields (dbase compatible currency fields)
- Unable to recognize DATE fields stored as "days since a particular start date" (i.e. days since 1-Jan-1900 or days since 1-Jan-0000)
- Paid product comes in three paid variants, and the price of paid product is too steep (Basic = $49, Business = $499, Enterprise = $1,995)
- Documentation alludes to some "advanced" demo scripts being available for download from the website, but I could not find them.
- Some commands have not been implemented, according to the documentation. These are commands I needed to use (such as converting from hexadecimal format to decimal format).
- The user interface is a real bear to learn - I would have found it impossible without the included sample files

Despite being able to handle the majority of the "easy" fields, I found that even the simplest of non-trivial conversions would require features that were only available in the Business version of the product. For the number of times I would need to parse through arbitrary data, the cost is simply prohibitive. I would probably use a different product, such as ParseRat, which I also reviewed.
