Copernic Desktop Search is an advanced search tool that indexes and scans your Windows PC's hard drives for specific files.
Powerful search: In stark contrast to the default Windows search option, Copernic Desktop Search gives you complete, detailed control over searching for files in a somewhat intuitive interface. Though Windows 7 and 8 have decent search features that should suffice for the average user, Copernic Desktop Search displays search parameters much more elegantly than Windows does.
Automatic filtering: Copernic Desktop Search automatically indexes and displays media files and documents via tabbed results. Many file types -- including movies, music, and documents -- are previewable in the Copernic Desktop Search interface as well.
Tedious trial procedure: To sign up for the full trial version, Copernic Desktop Search forces you to scour the Help section and click a link to request a trial key...from a French website. It's not the best process for enticing users to sign up for the Pro version. We would much prefer a trial version unlocked by default for 30 days in the native app.
Limited audience: It's hard to justify going Pro, especially when the built-in Windows search runs relatively satisfactorily for most common file types. There are other solutions for finding and managing hard-to-find files, such as spending a couple minutes to properly organize your email and data, or searching via power commands. Copernic's most notable advantages apply primarily to the most cluttered, file-hoarding, disorganized Windows users.
Copernic Desktop Search is a niche product for a small audience. For most users, the free version will be enough (if the default Windows search isn't already doing the job). Copernic does go that extra mile by throwing in email search from a single console, which could come in handy. Ultimately, Copernic Desktop Search accomplishes what it advertises and does it well, but the Pro version may be a tough sell. Download it and try it out for yourself.

What's new in this version:
Version 220.127.116.1192 supports: Microsoft OneNote, Lotus Notes 9, ePub e-book, offline PST indexation, sort by relevance, smart indexing; improves document & pdf preview.
Finds text strings quickly (after indexing); Good document preview (which seems to be improved in v6); Works with Thunderbird Email; Will Index & Find old Earthlink & Eudora Mail Attachments; Less intrusive system usage than prior versions; Easy "Refine" options vary with search type; Trial Version available;
Within (found) document text search highlighting does not work with all file types; Narrowing the results of a search, based on refining the Search Text, should be more convenient.
Even with good File / Folder organization, finding data can be difficult - given a large enough base of documents. Unless you are willing to commit EVERYTHING to an advanced PIM / Knowledge Database (such as the Excellent RightNote Professional), a quality Indexing / Search program is essential. For personal use, Copernic fits the bill nicely.
"Serious" users will want to spend some time looking at the Help / How to Use documents offered by Copernic - especially "Perform an Advanced Search."
All-in-all, well worth the entry cost, particularly given that the program is often available at a reduced price.
