Editors' Review

Copernic Desktop Search is an advanced search tool that indexes and scans your Windows PC's hard drives for specific files.

Powerful search: In stark contrast to the default Windows search option, Copernic Desktop Search gives you complete, detailed control over searching for files in a somewhat intuitive interface. Though Windows 7 and 8 have decent search features that should suffice for the average user, Copernic Desktop Search displays search parameters much more elegantly than Windows does.

Automatic filtering: Copernic Desktop Search automatically indexes and displays media files and documents via tabbed results. Many file types -- including movies, music, and documents -- are previewable in the Copernic Desktop Search interface as well.

Tedious trial procedure: To sign up for the full trial version, Copernic Desktop Search forces you to scour the Help section and click a link to request a trial key...from a French website. It's not the best process for enticing users to sign up for the Pro version. We would much prefer a trial version unlocked by default for 30 days in the native app.

Limited audience: It's hard to justify going Pro, especially when the built-in Windows search runs relatively satisfactorily for most common file types. There are other solutions for finding and managing hard-to-find files, such as spending a couple minutes to properly organize your email and data, or searching via power commands. Copernic's most notable advantages apply primarily to the most cluttered, file-hoarding, disorganized Windows users.

Bottom Line

Copernic Desktop Search is a niche product for a small audience. For most users, the free version will be enough (if the default Windows search isn't already doing the job). Copernic does go that extra mile by throwing in email search from a single console, which could come in handy. Ultimately, Copernic Desktop Search accomplishes what it advertises and does it well, but the Pro version may be a tough sell. Download it and try it out for yourself.

"Formerly Great product Gone Bad"

Compared to native windows search (Win 7 and above), CDS does not merit any pro entry or kudos

Sluggish performance both in indexing and search of indexed items. There are bad design decisions. Such as clinking on the column headers of the search results panel to change the sort order causes the search to be relaunched instead of just sorting the existing already found entries. Since Search is SLOW it gets very painful if you had lots of results entries that you need to sort from name order to date order etc.
They even closed their site's forum to new entries from end users. One of the few last user entry I found was a discussion from a couple of users discussing what product alternative's were available.
Version 4 and 5 appeared to get stuck on the network drives, so I deleted them from being searched leaving only one small 1.5 TB drive and told it to rebuild the index, after 5 hours I am going to uninstall the product and write off the cost of multiple Pro licenses for multiple machines. I might reinstall the Pro version that I have license to.

I mourn the loss of this formerly very competent tool.
Been a long time Copernic Desktop Search user starting with version 2. I purchased the pro version since I use network drives. With each update through the last update for version 3 performance improved and indexing speed was very good. With Marketing promises of even better performance and 64 bit support, I purchased version 4. Its indexing of even the most basic of items such as file names was so inconsistent, the tool basically was useless. Conversations with their "support" teams simply would say I need to buy the new version 5 to address my concerns. Surprise! Surprise! Version 5 still has poor indexing and search. After 3 days of indexing performance set to "Unrestricted (Use all Computer Resources)", Copernic does not cut it. On local drive I have a Copernic.txt file with info in it. Ask Copernic Search to locate for TXT file type with Copernic as the search term and it takes 34 seconds for it to respond no documents found. For comparison used the Windows search to search "This PC (Win 10) it took 58 seconds to successfully locate the file. Windows had to search 10 drives with the majority having native windows indexing turned OFF (since I used to rely on Copernic for searches). So Win 10 had to just brute force search directories. With Copernic today, it is as if all of the original programming talent is gone AND the company then decided with version 4 to rewrite everything from the ground up with newbies.

Easy interface, fast and does a good job of indexing files contents. I tried many similar programs but always came back to Copernic. It's free and the lite version is enough for home / small business use.

Installer crashing with error 2052/2053. Solved the problem by adding install as admin to W8.1 for .exe and .msi. I installed version 5 as admin and was OK. Can do with adding few file extensions such as the Bat email etc.

May not be perfect but it's the best among the rest.
