- "Search with Copernic"
- Version reviewed: Copernic Desktop Search 3.2
Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo aren't the only ones bringing more search power to consumer desktops. Copernic's Desktop Search tool makes it fast and easy to find documents, e-mails, and other files on local drives. Like other desktop search tools, it creates a searchable index of all the data on a computer's drives, and updates it every time a file is added, removed, or modified.
A left-side search column allows simple keyword queries and more refined searches based on file size, date, file type, or folder. Easy-to-read icons at the top of the screen let you limit searches by category, such as stored HTML pages, e-mail, and videos. The program is lightning-quick, displaying results as fast as you can type.
We especially like the Copernic Deskbar, a search window that appears in the Windows Taskbar and makes quick queries very handy. However, we would like an image viewer, and we wish the application's PowerPoint viewer could display graphics. Copernic comes with optional search toolbars for Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Overall, Copernic offers an efficient way to search your PC, especially for multiple or large hard drives.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.2
"Works as advertised - seems to be pretty quick"
Pros: Speeds up basic searching and is not a big drain on system performance.
Cons: Doesn't have advanced metadata querying.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.2
"Used to be good. Now has the MOST ANNOYING pop up ads"
Pros: Good job of search. Fast. Flexible
Cons: Can use too much cpu. But the real problem is the new pop-up ads for all kinds of junk. They literally yell at you - I had my speakers up loud and suddenly they started beeping. Took me a while to realize that it was Copernic Desktop Search 3.2.
Summary: If they don't fix the annoying ads, throw this away. It used to be the best of the search products but I may have to switch to something else.

Version: Copernic Desktop Search 3.2
"Makes Windows Explorer look like an idiot"
Pros: Search the content of everything on your machine.
Highly configurable.
Instantly preview the content which matches.
Works for Open Office v3 files (unlike Windoze Explorer).
Complex searches.
No nags.
No ads.
Fast. Blistering.Cons: If you want to search network drives, you'll need the pro version (£35 - or trial it free for a month). But given what it can do, it's well worth it. I stumped up.
Summary: This is a productivity tool. If you work with a lot of files - specifications, designs, delivery notes, bug reports, email discussions with clients and suppliers - this will help you find stuff quickly. Really quickly.
