Contactizer Pro for Mac

CNET Editors' review

Contactizer Pro is designed to help you organize and share all your personal and business contacts and information. This sort of CRM/PIM business software has always lagged behind its PC counterparts, but Contactizer Pro is one of the better choices available for the Mac, with a fairly beefy feature set and a clean, relatively intuitive interface. This app helps you track projects, tasks, and communication (including calls, chats, documents, and faxes, with alarms and follow-ups to invitations), and it also does a good job of integrating with Apple's core apps. During installation, Contactizer Pro syncs up with your Mail, iCal, and any mobile devices via iSync (plus you can sync up your events and tasks on multiple machines with MobileMe). Integration is also solid with Bluetooth devices and Skype, and you can make and log calls from within Contactizer Pro.

As with all complex applications of this kind, there is a bit of a learning curve, especially as you learn this app's particular interface and workflow. Unfortunately, this is exacerbated by Contactizer Pro's biggest drawback: while it has active support forums, there is very little documentation available, which is difficult to understand given the application's price and complexity.

    "developer awol"

    December 4, 2012  |   By jpjuggler

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.15

    Pros

I like the software, but wish the developer wasn't in hiding.

    Cons

developer doesn't return emails, no support for product.

    Summary

As a user of the software, I"ve noticed the forums are "temporarily" down for maintenance. I suspect that's a ruse b/c of all the negative comments concerning the total absence of support and total absence of any communication from the developer that were accumulating on the forums. and yet the developer is still selling the produca and has still have managed to upgrade to lion.

    "Developers should stop blaming Apple"

    August 28, 2010  |   By flacan

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.8

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Contactizer warns users on their on line help that (an objectionable statement) "Syncing with iCal is not our top priority since Contactizer is meant to replace your iCal usage." The sync never worked properly, and Contactizer displays occasionally errors messages disparaging Apple for that (a despicable practice). They even replied to my support request mail that "this is Apple fault, they are wicked!". Now the matter is made worse as Apple is moving to CalDav (already available with MobileMe calendar beta), not supported by Contactizer. Calendar syncing is an important feature for many of us so I would encourage Contactizer developers to a) adopt a more commercial attitude and b) speed up the release of a proper calendar sync function.

"Nice system if you can get past the bugs"

    May 17, 2010  |   By David.Diemer

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.7

    Pros

? Utilizes Mail, iCal, tasks and Skype functionality into a single product
? Does not modify current system applications
? An all-in-one communications center for mail, appointments, tasks, phone calls, follow-ups
    ? Support user-defined projects

    Cons

    ? Buggy synchronization feature
? Poor technical support; self-help by forum only
? Incompletely reads internet calendars regularly
? The user interface is clunky for a Mac app
? Constantly receive "App not responding"
    ? Poor documentation and help

    Summary

    Outlook on a Mac
I wanted a product that has the functionality of Microsoft Outllook but on a Mac. This is the closest thing I could find that did not change my calendar, mail, or other critical system information.

    SYNCHRONIZE PROBLEM
The biggest problem with this application is its abominable synchronization system which keeps tasks, calendars, and other functions synchronized with Contactizer. In an earlier version of 3.8, I was able to get it to work but consistent problems of mis-reading and mis-synchronizing my calendars caused me untold hours of manually repairing multiple alarms on repeating events, restoring iCal DBs, and deleting tasks that I had marked completed in iCal but which Contactizer still showed as an active task.

    CALENDAR SUBSCRIPTION PROBLEM
Another problem I have with Contactizer is that I have 5 calendar subscriptions ranging in size from 24 entries per year to my work calendar with over 700+ entries. Most of the time, Contactizer never properly displays the contents of all my subscribed calendars. And it's very slow displaying them in the first place. And it doesn't properly read the iCal birthday "subscribed" calendar, either.

    APP NOT RESPONDING
Finally, the product hangs on a regular basis. I never figured out exactly what was causing the problems. Was it a time issue? A memory leak? A lack of usage? I'm not sure. But I never wanted to close the product since I used it nearly continuously. But when I didn't use it for an undefined period of time, it would simply quit responding.

    TECH SUPPORT PROBLEM
Tech support is the worst. Everything you have trouble with, YOU are expected to find a prior issue in the forum BEFORE you submit a trouble ticket. And if you want to get scolded by them, post your problem in the Tech Support board and the board to see if anyone else has this problem. You are expected to send them dumps and logs of the application. I have spent more time looking for my problem in that forum, without resolution I may add, than I care to think about.

DELETED OLD VERSION AND INSTALLED NEW VERSION
All the above-mentioned caused me to App-Zap the entire product and remove all its associated DBs and preferences from my system. When the product moved to 3.8.7, I reinstalled it once again and went through the setup process. It had no problems displaying my contacts but few, if any, of my existing calendars displayed. And those that it did display were incomplete. I went through the Preferences and setup everything I could think of. I made a backup of my data. Then I started a synchronization. It has continued to hang (app not responding) at this message, "Synchronizing alarms 2/2" and never finished syncing. I have done this at least 5 times to no avail.

Shortly after the 5th attempt at setup, the Apple Me sync tool advised me that it had over 1,000+(!) conflicts with existing data! I canceled the Apple synchronization, reset all the AppleMe sync data from Windows and Outlook, and stopped. This is the same problem I was having before! Nothing has improved. By the way, I have NEVER been able to get it to synchronize properly on 3.8.7.

    SUMMARY
This product has SO MUCH potential. But it's obvious that there are some critical problems that prevent it from being a reliable application you can depend on. I don't purchase an app that consistently has such major problems. The very fact that it has destroyed my contacts once and ruined my iCal DB many times (thank you Apple and Time Machine), I hesitate recommending this product to anyone.

If you review the forum, you will see I'm not the only one experiencing the above problems. My advice to you is (1) Make sure you have extremely recent backups; and (2) Use at your own risk!

    "Contactizer Pro! Gorgeous! Scary Synchronization!"

    April 21, 2010  |   By EndlessFx

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.7

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.

I think Contactizer Pro is a gorgeous application with much customization, although I think more needs to be done with text and font size adjustment.

I would also like to see a Notes section added. (DayLite had notes built-in.)

The big problem with Contactizer Pro is the SCARY SYNCHRONIZATION. I built very detailed DayLite tasks, appointments, notes, contacts. I set up a sync with DayLite to iCal not so very long ago. (MarketCircle did not provide the best synch either, and in my opinion, marches to other than its customers' drummer!)

After trying Contactizer Pro (because of years of not being heard by MarketCircle, in the search for a more consumer-oriented vendor) and establishing a sync between Contactizer Pro and iCal, I noticed that tasks had been multiplied while others were completely missing in Contactizer Pro, iCal, and DayLite. Assigned colours were changed. Sound alarms did not sync. Contactizer Pro makes reminders only on the desktop with no assigned sound alarms. I would have to go through each and every task, appointment, etc. and manually build those reminders to what I had initially set in DayLite. (This is not the way I choose to work with information managers.)

After doing an update to Contactizer Pro from 3.8.6 to 3.8.7, I found I had no DayLite database. Nothing! Nada! I finagled for a while - reinstalling the DayLite Server, then finally starting up Contactizer Pro. My DayLite Server and database reappeared. I haven't fully checked tasks, appointments, contacts, notes one by one yet, so I don't know if any further corruption happened. I am so thankful, however, just to have the database back without having to contact a bunch of vendors. I am fearful enough to just remove Contactizer Pro for the moment. I certainly don't want another two nights and two days of throwing up.

There is always SOHO Notes and\or substitution individual applications to get away from MarketCircle, at least until I am no longer fearful or in jeopardy of losing data or database.

    "Fantastic Product"

    January 22, 2010  |   By rwebber6828

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.4

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have used Contactizer Pro for several years now and have been very satisfied with the product and the customer service. The program is great and promises to be even better with the next point update which will no longer require Apple's buggy sync architecture. I highly recommend this product.

"Worked great until 10.6 - developer very slow to fix."

    January 6, 2010  |   By mlaurencg4

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.3

    Pros

Initially very pleased with this applications functionality - comprehensive scheduling details, category labelling, iPhone notifications. Very good-looking interface.

    Cons

Since mid-November, all notifications are missing date and time of event / meeting. This initially caused a serious missed appointment. The company knows about the problem but has yet to fix the problem.

    Summary

Very disappointed with extensive delay (2 months) to resolve missing date / time info in event/meeting notifications sent out via email or displayed on iPhone. More disappointed in the developer's attitude - "if you're not happy, go buy another app"

"Has so much potential but flawed. C"

    December 12, 2009  |   By simonator--2008

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.3

    Pros

Contact management very good - has excellent potential

    Cons

calendar synchronisation flawed. Customer interaction pretty bad

    Summary

the developer seems to be hell bent on forcing people to work in their way; rather than accepting that people work in different ways - an example:

"Syncing with iCal is not our top priority since Contactizer is meant to replace your iCal usage. We think that using 2 calendar application in parallel or at the same time is not handy or efficient."

Their forum shows time and time again a very obstinate and intransigent attitude to the users.

Despite all of this, Contactizer Pro has the potenital to be the market leader, it just needs to realise that an open application is much more use than a closed. If I want to add events in my iPhone or in iCal, I expect them to naturally come up in CP. "Any modification made from iCal, .Mac or devices (via iSync) will require you sync manually by clicking Contactizer Sync button ."

"Quality App but it will cost ya"

    October 2, 2009  |   By Joe Heathen

    Version: Contactizer Pro 3.8.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I paid the $119 a couple years back and found it useful, though some of the data entry features are a bit clumsy. Upon upgrading to Snow Leopard (which cost me $29) I found out that the Snow Leopard Compatible version of this would be a $69 upgrade. Useful? Yes. $119 to get in the door and $69 every couple years useful? No.

I've now migrated my CRM system to Bento, which is far more customizable to fit my exact CRM needs (though admittedly less "slick"). They are pretty aggressive about their upgrade fees, too, but the cost to get in the door is only $49 and the upgrades are in the $30 range.

If the upgrade fee hadn't been so high, it wouldn't have considered abandoning this app. A $29 upgrade fee would have been much more palatable. I can't help but think this developers pricing policies is costing it customers, old and new.
