Editors' Review

Comodo Internet Security is Comodo's free antivirus suite. It packs an antivirus scanner and firewall, which are standard for AV suites, but also unique tools like an integrated sandbox environment and a desktop widget.

Pros

Virtualized sandbox: Not many antivirus scanners come with a sandbox environment for running unknown programs and Web sites, but Comodo Internet Security goes the extra mile by providing a virtualized environment that looks like Chrome OS. From the virtualized box, you can browse the Web using Comodo's own Dragon browser and not worry about programs making permanent changes to your system. Certain features like Adobe Flash are disabled by default, even when running browsers like Chrome.

Scanning and processing: Comodo Internet Security displays flagged items as a hierarchical tree, whereas other antivirus apps show results in a line-by-line list. This organization makes it easier to act on known apps that are flagged as potentially unwanted programs. For each detected threat, you can clean, ignore the warning, or label false alerts for stub installers and known programs that fall in the potentially unwanted category.

Malware detection: AV-Test rated Comodo Internet Security at 5.5/6.0. The scores put Comodo Internet Security in the upper 90th percentiles compared to the industry average for malware detection in a four-week test period.

Cons

Aggressive notification: Upon first use, Comodo Internet Security bugs you about...pretty much everything. We were pegged with countless pop-up prompts from minimizing windows and detected networks, to pushing GeekBuddy (Comodo's tech-help hotline) services post-scan. It was so overwhelming that we felt more stressed than educated.

Potentially unwanted flags: Comodo Internet Security is eager to categorize apps and installers as potentially unwanted programs. A couple of our own files were considered unknown and flagged as risks. Comodo Internet Security leans toward "better safe than sorry," but some alerts felt highly unwarranted.

Bottom Line

Comodo Internet Security offers solid protection and some pretty useful features, thanks to its integrated virtualization approach to running apps and browsing the Web. Though the pop-up explanations and slightly aggressive flags are annoying, we still recommend Comodo Internet Security as a terrific free antivirus program.

"Amazing, in a league of its own (yet free!)"

April 02, 2015  |  By kh44567

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security Premium 8.1.0.4426

Pros

-New, innovative way of thinking about protection, while still using the tired and true methods.
-Full protection that absolutely exceeds (with the right config) any others including paid for free.
-Light on system resources, even using Proactive set-up.
-Extremely flexible and endless customization.
-Would provide great protection for most people, even with defaults.
-Has virtual desktop.
-Has options to run anything virtually, great for browsers.
-Free support options would be fine for average user.

Cons

-Support for advanced users. The forums do not offer a huge amount of support (no responses, not a lot of activity etc.). You can submit ticket, but its kind of the typical not so great support, at least for an advanced user. They miss the point of what you are asking and keep answering basic questions they think you are asking.
-Comodo secureDNS is hard to get information about, still is certainly better than your ISP and you should allow at install.
-Some of the advanced configuration options are complicated to figure out and hard to get answers on (although 99% of users won't need them)

Summary

This is an amazing program that does things that no other anti-virus can- at any price. If you see what malware researchers use and like, it is this software. People worry about auto-sandboxing, but that happens for so few applications (Comodo has an extensive list of known and trusted applications so if you are an average user, you should never have an unknown application). If this still scares you, all you need to do is allow pop-ups and then you will get an alert if this ever does happen, and you can make a decision. There is also HIPS. Everything works seamlessly and I have had no issues (I expected some). This is really unbeatable protection and one of the few things than can protect you against truly unknown malware. Really amazing, I can't say enough about this and I have used them all (Mcafee, trend micro, avira, avast, bit-defender, etc.). It comes with the firewall, which is a really popular program on its own, but you can get just the antivirus or just the firewall as well.

Its free- the paid version includes no extra features- just malware removal help and $500 guarantee. This might be worth it for some. The most premium includes remote help for any computer issues or set-up, not just Comodo. This might be great for inexperienced users or someone who just doesn't have time for new software set-up, printer configuration. If I made more money, I would consider this just to be able to get some extra time.

Try this, even if you don't see the difference, under the hood it is protecting you in a way nothing else does. Head over to any forum where experts are talking- they all respect this and think its in a league of its own.

"Great Internet Security Suite!"

January 02, 2015  |  By josh007007

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security Premium 8.0

Pros

- Doesn't slow down PC
- Sandbox feature is handy when downloading shady software
- Comodo Dragon forces HTTPS on most sites, and blocks tracking
- Only free AV that I've found that has Sandbox, Firewall, and Anti-virus

Cons

- Install could be better, option to not install Geek Buddy and Dragon is hidden unless you press 'Customize installation'
- Once installed, it wants to download a further 256MB in a database update
- Advanced options; bit hard to get around; not really good for beginners.

Summary

Comodo Internet Security Free is the best AV software I've come across. It's free and is packed with features. It isn't the easiest AV to get around in, but feature wise, AMAZING! For beginner PC users, this might not be for you, try Bitdefender Free.

Unless you want to purchase GeekBuddy, DON'T INSTALL IT! If you did, you can uninstall Geekbuddy under Programs and Features in the Windows Control Panel.

Overall, for me, it beats the free versions of Avast and AVG easily. And it doesn't slow my PC (which is a Gigabyte Q2550 - Windows 8 x64, with 4 core CPU and 4GB RAM). Don't know how it preforms on a 2 core PC.

"BEST INTERMEDIATE Antivirus/Firewall/Internet Security!"

December 04, 2014  |  By LancesComputerRepair

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security Premium 7.0

Pros

Keeps my Computer and My Customers Computers with Windows XP SP3, Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8 stay Clean and Safe! Helps my customers realize what they can and can not do, should and should not do, helping them be a little paranoid of what to watch out for against hackers. I also install "Malwarebytes" along with for extra protection.

Cons

Must be installed and totally updated with all 3 Scans done on Windows 8 before Upgrading to Windows 8.1 operating system, otherwise u might run into issues or the very least u need to double click on shortcut on Desktop to get FULLY up and running before going anywhere on the internet, otherwise they are not protected.

"Comodo is spyware"

August 03, 2014  |  By justsomeuser

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

Pros

None at all. It can't really be fully uninstalled unless you are a professional.

Cons

Basically almost impossible to uninstall. Tried to uninstall that and geek buddy many ways, and couldn't. It screwed up my laptop.

Summary

Avoid this program because it takes over your browsers even if you uninstalled i. It will still be running on your pc if you uninstall it using various advanced programs.

"Overzealous, will destroy installs..."

July 21, 2014  |  By zarzarbeast

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

Pros

Not sure, maybe its worthwhile to have a security program this hardcore.

Cons

Destroys installations of other programs.
The program constantly blocks installations of other programs as well as processes spawned from those programs or program installations. Long story short. You may have to disable the program to install other programs. I'm pretty sure this defeats the purpose of the program. But its free so what do you expect.

"It does require IT knowledge to set it up properly"

June 25, 2014  |  By ITHelp4321

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

Pros

The most powerful if you spend time customizing it. Firewall is the best.

Cons

Don't use this antivirus or custom settings, pro active protection etc. Start with training mode and then move to safe mode.

Summary

The best firewall, HIPS and proactive protection if you don't use out of the box settings. Use custom installation and Untick the option for Priv Dog, Geek buddy etc or your computer will be taken ower and start up will be very slow and it could cause Blue screen of death or your computer to freeze.

"In spite of glowing reviews this product worries me"

June 07, 2014  |  By johnj2010

 |  Version: Comodo Internet Security 7.0

Pros

Installation easy, and unwanted add-ons seem to have removed easily too. Quick scan was fast, compared to other products I have tried. It found one threat on first pass, which Malwarebytes and Hitman were unable to see, but was it real? Full scan delivered 8 more new threats, none of which showed under Windows essentials or Malwarebytes. So it looks very thorough, and cleaned without hitches.

Cons

After install Chrome was noticeably slower and CPU usage significantly higher with just Chrome and Comodo idling (compared to Windows Security Essentials.
Anything found opens a "GeekBuddy" screen offering to connect to an expert who will assist in removing the malware.
No on-screen advice on whether 'Clean' is sufficient.
The software inserts small ads occasionally, and Comodo offer paid-for products, but that seems a very optimistic business model.
The GeekBuddy chat/phone immediately asks for remote access to the PC, and can't advise unless this is done. Others have remarked that unknown amounts of programs are then installed.
Cleaning removes the files. There is no warning that cleaning a suspect email attachment results in the deletion of the entire email folder.
Information on the location and nature of suspect files is scant, cannot be copied and pasted, and there is no indication of severity.

Summary

Two of my supposed malware items were files in recently installed ware from trusted suppliers (HP and Keil), the rest being email attachments, so I suspect false alerts. The response seems to be aimed at getting the user to phone GeekBuddy and allow remote access, no matter what the nature of the alert, so perhaps they are not too worried about false alerts. I did not proceed with that, so am not aware whether GeekBuddy in some way asks for payment for the service, or whether the cost is in having additional products installed on the computer, some of which may not be free.
Several PC magazines and sites have approved this product as highly effective, so maybe I'm just paranoid - or maybe the company name has unfortunate connotations. (The C(K)omodo dragon feeds by biting its prey from concealment, thus infecting it with venom and pathogens from its saliva, then waits for it to die before consuming the corpse.) Its behaviour reminds me too much of ScareWare tactics often used to persuade users to connect to or download suspect services.
If it quacks like a duck..............
TANSTAAFL.
