Editors' review

Comodo IceDragon is a secure Web browser based on the same open-source browser engine that powers Mozilla's Firefox. Like the Chrome-based Comodo Dragon, IceDragon offers a variety of security and performance enhancements to the browser core, such as improved social media integration, fast page loading via Comodo's integrated secure DNS service, and SiteInspector, which scans Web pages for malware directly from the browser. IceDragon is fully compatible with all Firefox plug-ins and add-ons, too. There's currently no 64-bit IceDragon release, but we tried the regular 32-bit version in 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, and it browsed with the best of them, and not just Firefox but also Chrome and its Comodo cousin, Dragon. The latest version, IceDragon v22, is the same as Mozilla's latest Firefox release, v22.

IceDragon's installation involves several options, including setting your Internet connection to use Comodo's secure (and free) Secure DNS service all the time, just with IceDragon (the default option, and our choice) or not at all. We started with our usual broadband settings and then tried Comodo's DNS service. We could also create a portable version of the software and import favorites, cookies, passwords, and other data from our other browsers. IceDragon has its own look. The biggest visual difference between it and Firefox is IceDragon's blue dragon mascot, though Comodo's icy-cool take on Mozilla's style fits the name, too. With our normal connection, IceDragon performed well against the latest Firefox and Chrome releases in bandwidth tests. While Chrome and Dragon basically tied for overall speed champ, Firefox has narrowed the gap. The surprise was how fast IceDragon was with Comodo's Secure DNS service: Still not as fast as Chrome or Dragon, but close, and consistently faster than box-standard Firefox. Speed usually gives way to security in proxy services, but Comodo's is the first we've tried that actually made secure connections faster.

We've seen more Firefox clones than we care to remember; and the same goes for Chrome. But IceDragon really stands out; and the same goes for Dragon. Both Comodo browsers loaded surprisingly fast using Comodo's Secure DNS Service. We're adding IceDragon to our regular roster.

    "Firefox on STEROIDS"

    June 21, 2014   |   By puneetrai7

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

Guys this IS Firefox on STEROIDS with added Comodo security.
    Best of both worlds.

    Cons

None really. Should have an unblock websites mode to hide IP by default.

    Summary

    Too good to be true.

    "Excellent Speed and Format"

    May 27, 2014   |   By IllinoisAreaMan

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

    -- very fast
-- open format gives me more website and less menu filling my screen

    Cons

-- "virtual mode" to websurf in the cloud without a trail turns out to be a HIGHLY invasive security program for your PC. It takes over all your security and works hard to have you install additional menu options that counteract all the great features of the browser

    Summary

Great browser, but disappointing "virtual mode" that takes over your PC.

    "good program, bad marketing"

    May 19, 2014   |   By trei_zece

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

fast. runs flash applications smoothly, with no problems; runs several flash applications at once with no problems; no use of hardware resources like Chrome does.

    Cons

1.It forces you to use yahoo search, which must be the worst search engine in the world. you can't change it.
    2. after I used google a couple of times to search for things, it reported google as a dangerous site and it blocked it; so no matter what I did, I could no longer see google or read my emails on gmail. or use any other google site (they all stopped "existing").

don't know about other people, but to me this is too much.

    Summary

I would love to use this browser, if it stopped trying to control me and my internet usage. it begs the question - if they think blocking the competition is acceptable behavior, what else is this application actually doing?

    "Must do better"

    May 12, 2014   |   By UK_User23

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

Not (yet) adopting Firefox's massive mistake of adverts in tabs.

    Cons

Can't change which version of English is used. Sometimes hangs system.

    Summary

Like Turkish Delight in the 70's, this is full of promise, but still needs work.

"This is how Firefox should be."

    May 10, 2014   |   By Son_of_Earth

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

    Faster than Firefox.
    Compatible with Firefox-addons.
    Page scanner (Comodo web inspector).
Offers to change DNS to comodo secureDNS for both all applications or just for IceDragon or opt out.

    Cons

None yet. Will update this review when I find some.

    Summary

I've had earlier versions before and they were unstable with random crashes. I'm glad Comodo resolved this issue. No random crashes yet with this new version.
I recommend this for all users.

"Just like having Firefox, only better."

    May 07, 2014   |   By ekertin

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

Basically, it's Firefox. I find it less buggy than Firefox. It accepts most firefox plugins. I think it's a great firefox alternative. Firefox constantly hangs, freezes, or crashes on my HP laptop Windows 7.

    Cons

It does have a few quirks, but still less than firefox. There are some software add-ons that don't recognize Icedragon as a firefox alternative, but this is out weighed by the constant crashes I get with firefox. This also doesn't update as often as firefox, but that might actually be a plus.

    Summary

Again, firefox constantly hangs and crashes on my year old hp laptop. Icedragon seems to be more stable for me, and I'm going to uninstall Firefox.

"Didn't work for me and Flash Update had Chrome & Mcafee"

    May 01, 2014   |   By musicman4you

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

Not icedragons fault..I don't know I didn't get to use it and the Tabs didn't work.Flash Update was dirty, nasty and sneaky.

    Cons

This is not Comodo icedragons fault but when it told me to update the newest Flash from Adobe I did on the page it gave me and I seen it installing Google Chrome.I closed it down before it could install. Then I tried again and it installed the Mcafee Security Scanner on my PC so fast I couldn't stop it.I had to clean a lot of crap off of my PC thanks to Adobe Flash and there new tricky programs they add.If you update Flash you better look real close on that page so you don't get Chrome and Mcafee.I seen on google were IT professionals and people that work on computers also didn't see the well hidden options of other programs in Adobe Flash. It put the Mcafee Scanner in C:\DOCUME~1\MyName\LOCALS~1\Temp\ContentDATs.exe So I just took all night and removed the Mcafee stuff from hidden Folders & other places on my PC and icedragon which had many many leftovers that Registry cleaners could not find.CCLeaner didn't even let icedragon show up for me.I guess thats CCLeaners fault though.

    Summary

If Flash hadn't screwed things up and tried to install Chrome and it did install Mcafee then it is probably a good Browser. The first thing it ask for was the newet Flash and that screwed everything up.Be sure to look the Adobe Flash download page real close.Adobe has stooped to a real low doing this.I don't trust Adobe and use another PDF reader instead of Adobes.I guess they made a deal with Chrome and Mcafee. So sad.Google Adobe adds Chrome and Mcafee.Im not the only one that fell for it.Some did a system restore and some had to reinstall Windows.

    "No flaws in this product"

    April 11, 2014   |   By lanquihue

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

Uses Firefox's core code, so you know it's very good

    Cons

    None that I have found

    Summary

I know it uses Firefox's open source code, but I could no longer bring myself to use Firefox after they decided to endorse the totalitarian thought police's use of mob rule.

Comodo is a separate entity, and so I view Ice Dragon as Comodo taking advantage of what others have done, and since this involves Mozilla, I cheer them on.

That said, this functions the same as Firefox, meaning it's very, very good. Additionally, the user can take advantage of Comodo's DNS service to filter out malicious sites, but you don't have to. One bonus, and this I insisted on before using full time, is that the Firefox plugin for "do not track me" works. My only concern is that Comodo will put this gem out, and then tire of it as fast as it started. Mozilla made a huge mistake, a massive mis-calculation with not understanding that their users are overwhelmingly libertarian and not pitchfork carrying brown shirts.

"I'll check back on that last plus/minus half point.."

    April 07, 2014   |   By Fastmover

    Version: Comodo IceDragon 26.0.0.2

    Pros

    > Nice, smooth install with no extra baggage, clear and accurate transfer of (almost, see below) everything I had on the "old" browser and the Big Plus of the DNS system for us Tinfoil Hat guys.
    > Could just be that I'm running XP yet, but absolutely no problem with losing the FB tag or modifying Search Engine selections. (I'll prove that guess when I get to the Win7 machines later.)
    > Looks a lot like 'Fox (particularly when you go shopping for addons), but skosh smaller footprint and runs enough faster that it surprises.
    >Only been running it for a few days but no apparent problems with crashes (although I've been doing everything I can think of to make it go boom...) and nothing but nice smooth, fast startups.

    Cons

    > Didn't get a successful transfer of passwords 'Fox-to-IceDragon, but I probably fatfingered one of those selection boxes and it's really about time I changed some of those passwords anyway.

    Summary

Suffered through IE, switched to Netscape and then moved to 'Fox. If it's time for another move, this IceDragon looks like a real good choice.
