Editors' review

Solid 3D graphics, supernatural effects, and good sound contribute to an immersive environment that makes this first-person shooter a horrific success. Summoned to a haunted estate, you must fight through waves of nasty beasties in a quest to end the Curse of the Undying King.

Set in a fantastic world of evil, Undying uses lighting effects and sound to create a powerful atmosphere of horror. As if you were in a scary movie, ghosts suddenly appear behind you in a mirror, and cracks of lightning suddenly light up rooms, often to terrifying effect. Bodiless faces of ectoplasm attack you from the air, and disgusting ghouls rise from the dirt. To confront these unholy combatants, you have two types of attacks at your disposal: physical (shotgun, scythe, hands) and magical (spells of many varieties). The system of switching weapons isn't extremely intuitive, as you must scroll around a circle, but the other controls are conventional for first-person shooters and serve the game well.

With a slower pace than many modern first-person shooters, Undying relies heavily on its story and background, and it succeeds for the most part. The level in the demo is extremely dim, so turn up the brightness on your monitor and confront the darkness with eyes wide open.

    "Best Underestimated Game Ever"

    August 27, 2013   |   By Weparicua

    Version: Not Found

    Pros

This game is a real spook. Turn up speakers as you explore the haunted manor as you experience the horrific powers of the undead in the darkness of your room. All in the comfort of the knowledge that you will collect power-ups, potions, and the sort as you progress through the game.

    Cons

The entire gaming community is dismayed at the fact of how little success this game had in the market despite being a great game.

"IMPORTANT - MUST READ IF YOU HAVE XP"

    May 09, 2002

    Version: Not Found

    Summary

If you have xp, IT WILL RUN! Do not listen to other people. Xp is based on win 2000/nt and the games says it is not made to run under that operating system.

TO MAKE THE GAME RUN UNDER XP, right click on the shortcut, than click on the compatiblity tab. Set the compatability to WIN 98/ME.

If you do this the game will run. IT IS A MUST DOWNLOAD, this game is awesome!

    "A "must to have" game!!!"

    April 03, 2002

    Version: Not Found

    Summary

I think this is the best of all the TRUE horror video games out there. There are a lot of "get the Jesus out of me" games but this is a real masterpiece of atmospheric fear. Trust me you wont feel fine with this game, you will be spooked, shocked, freaked, sleepless, and the most important: the fear. Any fan of horror movies, books and video games should check it out and is a must to have to all Clive fans.

"THE single most scary Game I've ever played"

    February 23, 2002

    Version: Not Found

    Summary

I have played horror games before, but this takes the cake. The entire game creeped me out seriously, I found myself losing sleep because of it. The only two complaints I have about it are that the first and last parts of the game drag out too long. The first part is the monastery BEFORE Lizbeth and the last part is the Eternal Autumn right after Aaron. The middle of the game (Parts involving Ambrose, Aaron, the Trisanti, Bethany's cottage, Oneiros (The hell-like place), and the isle of stones) was way too short, I blew past all of those parts in the same day. The second complaint is the fact that the video kept jerking around, making it impossible to read text or subtitles. Serious cases of this involved what looked like the screen cracking, forcing you to save your game and restart the computer. Other than that, I would say that the game is worth the download wait or the money spent on buying it.
