Chipmunk finds duplicates fast and in every mountable volume. It deletes found duplicates intelligently e. g. you can delete all files in a folder that have duplicates outside of it or vice versa. You can reveal every file in the Finder and on Leopard even Quick Look it.
one of my favourite programmes. reliably identifies duplicates
Cons
seems to build up a cache and ignore some duplicates after multiple searches.

Pros
I loved this program back when it worked.
Cons
Doesn't work at all. When you double-click the application, it immediately quits "unexpectedly." After doing this a few times, you start to wonder why it's still unexpected.

Used to be awesome. Now it doesn't load.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Aug 2, 2011<p/>PS - I have an Early 2008 iMac running OS X 10.5.8
Good little program for cleaning up your drive space.

Pros
I love the way it organizes duplicates in two categories -- inside and outside the folder or drive you choose. This makes it really easy to consolidate all your backups in one place, and get rid of extra copies you don't need.
Cons
It did take me a couple of minutes to figure it out -- but as soon as I did -- I was sold.
Summary
A great program -- does one thing really well!
Works as expected, overpriced

Pros
Visual folder mapping, easy to use, fast
Cons
understanding exactly what gets deleted is a bit confusing. needed to reread doc 3 or 4 times to finally get it. Nag message on unregistered version which increases delay per each use may be clever but bad for business.
Summary
Chipmunk is handy tool. Once you understand what files are slated for removal relative to the selected folder, it becomes quite easy to delete without regret. However, it is a utility with only one function. It does not warrant a $25 price tag. The cost combined with nag message has this tool slated for removal from my hard drive.
I can't download this software -- URl non existent!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />As the description says, it finds duplicates and gives you a logical way to remove them. For those of us with large libraries of samples and loops, it's a great way to keep your space needs down.
With sample libraries, it's a little tricky because an "instrument" will look in a specific place for the samples it needs. If more than one instrument need to access the same sample, it just takes more planning and organization to keep that alll straight. It might not be worth the space regained.
At some point, I had suggested that when removing duplicates, an alias to the remaining original could be an option. The developer explained why this might be a dodgy thing to implement. I like the basic way it works, once I got the hang of it. I have been going through various volumes and tidying up. I haven't had any problems with Chipmunk.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />For years I have looked for the prefect duplicate finder for the Mac and I have tried many. All of them struggled to find the right metaphor for displaying and handling duplicates in an intuitive way. I don't think Chipmunk has it "perfect", but it is the best I've seen. Once you understand what "inside" and "outside" duplicates are it is very quick to scan through your files and move dups to the trash. It took about 2 hours to scan a nearly full 500Gb FireWire drive where I had backed up several drives more than once. I highly recommend this little app.
