"basic function and price good but too many drawbacks"
Version: Brother MFC-210C USB 1.1.2.0
Pros
As a printer it is fast and produces good copy.
Cons
Even after replqacing the black ink, it will not allow you to print if any of the colored inks are declared low; must replace all of them even for black-and-white text printing. -- Also will not scan a book if the type is not very very black.

"The best printer we have boughten"
Version: Brother MFC-210C USB 1.1.2.0
Pros
It always works
Cons
None so far (we have had this printer for 4 years now)
Summary
We have bought a lot of printers and this is the first one that has not broken down with in a year. I highly recommend this printer to any one.

"Won't work if any of the ink cartridges is low."
Version: Brother MFC-210C USB 1.1.2.0
Pros
I like the features, having a scanner at home and copier.
Cons
Can't get the fax to work, have no idea why. Also won't let me use up the ink cartriges: when any of the inks get low, the printer stops working and demands new ink. Sometimes it says there's no cartridge there at all, even when there is.
Summary
My HP printer lets me use up all the ink, lets me print with whatever ink is available. I hate the way the Brother holds me hostage for more ink, even when there seems to be quite a bit left. The best deal for your money if you do a lot of black printing is to buy a laser printer. Ink jets give you less than 200 pages per ink cartridge, roughly, while a laser jet gives you 2-3000 roughly per cartridge. So I have an HP laser printer I use for all my black printing. The Brother does print pictures fairly well, as long as all the inks are full!

"I will strongly advise against purchasing this Printer"
Version: Brother MFC-210C USB 1.1.2.0
Pros
Very Little. The only advantage is that it comes with a scanner, printers and fax machine.
Cons
The ink is expensive and it does not allow you to print in black only if you run out of colored ink like most printers.
Summary
This printer may be a combo but let me tell you - DO NO BUY IT! Brother makes money on the ink and the ink is very expensive. Get this, if you run out of color ink on let's say the HP Deskjet, the printer prints in black only or shades of other colors that are still full in the printer. If you have no color ink in the HP, you can still print in Black. But NOT the Brother MFC 210C. If you have a full cartridge of Black ink, Magenta and Cyan but you run out of Yellow, the printer STOPS printing. That's right!!! You do not get to print in black alone. The printer prompts you to change the ink and if you do not change the yellow, it will not print. There is definitely a catch to buying this printer and friends to me, this is a real rip off. I should have the option to print in black only if I run out of color. Don't buy this printer, you save upfront on the cost, but by the time you have bought ink for a year, you would have spent twice the amount compared to if you bought a more expensive one up front and the ink cost less.
