From bergdesign:
Brightness adds a menu bar item for adjusting your display's brightness. And, and if your PowerBook, MacBook or MacBook Pro has a backlit keyboard, Brightness adds a second menu bar item for adjusting it.

"Nice app if you have nonstandard keyboard"
Version: Brightness 1.1.2
Pros
* Makes life easier when you can't use standard brightness keys
* An ordinary app, doesn't modify your systemCons
Probably an unneeded program for most users with standard Mac keyboards
Summary
I use an old Mac-compatible ergonomic keyboard with my iMac that doesn't have any dedicated hardware-control keys. Until now, changing display brightness has meant keeping the Displays icon on the menu bar and then (1) clicking the icon, (2) clicking Displays Preference , (3) going to the Preferences window and sliding the bar, (4) closing the Displays window. Brightness.app shortens all that to (1) click on Brightness icon, (2) slide the slider and release.
It adds a menu bar icon, but now I don't have to keep the Displays icon up there. -
