BiblePro from BibleOcean is a free software Bible with interactive features that make it a fine study tool. You can add a raft of extras, such as Bible editions, maps, illustrations, numerous commentaries, and other resources by what was claimed to be an additional free download. However, we discovered that it requires a "donation" to download the "free CD" and other extras.

When we installed and opened BiblePro, a pop-up let us enter our e-mail address to activate the program's free registration, which entitles users to perpetual free updates. The Word-style interface opened with Genesis displayed in the main window in two tabs, one for American Standard Version and another for the King James Version. A left-hand tree view displayed expandable chapter headings, while two panels below offered References and Commentaries, each tabbed with numerous entries, including well-known reference texts. Unfortunately, whenever we toggled between the ASV and KJV tabs, three tabs with ad links would open in our browser; apparently, the for-pay download alleviates this annoyance. We clicked Book Library, which offered the same download link. We tried the Maps button; again, we were offered a chance to buy something. Visual Bible Study, iPod and Android; it seemed whatever we tried on the toolbar led to an empty entry, a new browser tab or three, and the opportunity to use Paypal. The download includes WebBible, a link to an online version that offers more features, albeit in an ad-supported online format.

We don't object to a modular approach in software or to additional features that cost money, but we think BibleOcean should be more up front about what's free and what isn't. While none of the requested donations was more than a few dollars, software is either free or it isn't. Still, the basic BiblePro download is free and offers a lot, and the online version includes some extras. For many users, it may be more than enough.

"Unbelievably annoying - not what it used to be"

    August 01, 2012   |   By Alan Mintaka

    Version: BiblePro 14.9.0

    Pros

None - impossible to use because of constant internet linking to ads.

    Cons

Program opens THREE new browser windows/tabs with ads every time a bible chapter or text link is clicked. Click on 3 or 4 chapters in a book, get 9-12 new browser tabs. Not only that, the browser takes program scope when the advertising websites are loaded, forcing you to re-access the Bible Pro program window with a mouse click. If you happen to click on another chapter/text link when you do that... you're back in the browser with three MORE open windows/tabs. It's really bad. There is a message at the top of the program window saying that ads will not appear in the $2.99 CD version. That's a great price, but there are better ways to advertise the product. Being this annoying certainly didn't get my business. It's too bad - Bible Pro used to be a great resource. No longer. Now, it's adware JUNK.

"Great product and easy to use."

    Version: BiblePro 14.9.0

    Pros

You use to be able to buy the cd and it included alot of information and one low price.

    Cons

    Everything is seperated and costs.

    Summary

Wish they would put this back together the way it was originally. I don't have a problem with purchasing other bible versions. And they should be alot more up front with cost. Don't say this is free when it isn't.

"Free but paid for by excessive annoying Google ads."

    November 14, 2010   |   By amotwell

    Version: BiblePro 14.9.0

    Pros

At a glance, it looked very much like ESword (which I love) and may have even had more features.

    Cons

Every time I did *anything* the program opened a new tab in Firefox with a new Google ad. Very annoying. I had 15 extra tabs open just from glancing at what features the program had. Uninstalled moments after installation.

    Summary

I bet the product is great but the annoyance factor makes it not worth it.
