Editors' review

Autorun Manager helps you disable running apps, including persistent system tasks that eat up CPU and memory without being of much use. However, to be able to completely stop self-restarting processes, you need root access, which may void your device's warranty and cause other technical issues.

Pros

Two modes: The Basic mode lists all apps that start when you turn on your device and enables you to kill any of them with a tap. The Advanced mode shows you receivers for system-wide events, such as those running in the background refreshing widgets or fetching data from the Web, and enables you to kill and keep closed even OS processes that restart automatically.

Facile: With a single tap, you can enable or disable any running process to boost the performance of your device. The app proves especially useful for maximizing system performance before launching a resource-intensive app like a video editor.

App management options: Long-tapping an app icon brings up a menu through which you can get more info about the app, switch to it, or even uninstall it.

Cons

Advanced mode requires root access: You cannot disable self-restating system apps without root access -- obtaining root access just for that isn't worth it for most users. Basically you have to compromise the security and potentially the functionality of your device to be able to disable system apps. If you're not willing to do this, you won't get the full benefits this app has to offer.

Small icons: The interface looks and feels good overall and proves quite accessible, but the app icons appear small, especially on a tablet, so if you have a big thumb, it's easy to tap on the wrong icon.

Bottom Line

A capable app, Autorun Manager delivers what it promises, but to take full advantage of its features you need root access, which is something that you shouldn't do unless you know what you're doing. That said, the Basic mode for killing unnecessary, non-essential processes is a good enough reason for you to download this app.
