The AstoundSound Expander 3.0 is a software application that runs on your Macintosh or PC. Expander is always running in the background processing audio from all applications.

It takes any stereo audio as input and produces a significantly wider stereo image, while preserving center information (e.g. vocals or center staged instruments), in real time.

Pros
Completely redefined audio from my iTunes library. On the rare occasion when I turn it off (usually to demo for a friend) I remember just how incredible this software is. A must have for anyone who listens to and appreciates music.
Cons
That I can't use it in my car!
Summary
Unbelievable. Must hear it to believe it. Puts other surround sound and 3D sound systems and speakers to shame.

Summary
I just purchased a program called Hear from JoeSoft for $29 and it works great, and if you buy it from OWC they have a 30 day money back guarantee. What a huge difference it makes!
BEWARE! This product does not work with OS 10.6.2.

This product stopped working on the update to OS 10.6.2. The vendor has said repeatedly that it is being fixed, but meanwhile has refused appeals for refunds. I used the software for two weeks, it's been dead for ten weeks. I feel gyped.

Pros
When used on MacBook with external speakers the sound is great. Great stereo sound and natural sounding. Definitely improves my music.
Cons
As another reviewer said, they can't get it to work as advertised with Snow Leopard.
Summary
It turns itself off between sleep cycles and you have to go into preferences to reset it--very annoying. The sound is so good that I am willing to put up with it. When you inquire they say they're still working on it (after almost six months). I also found them to be rather insulting, suggesting that the problem was mine for being an early adopter of Snow Leopard (after 5 months on Snow Leopard). If they ever get around to fixing it I would give it 5 stars.

It DOES NOT work! Paid for it -THEN I saw the note doesn't work with Snow Leopard - "we're aware and working on it, update coming". Got the update - Their update STILL DOESN'T WORK! Contacted them - "we're aware and working on it"!
Summary
Dislike - they're still working on it! There's no way to turn it off or disable. Must go into System Preferences each time you start your mac to turn it off.
Sounds Great, Easy to use and Airtunes compatible!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I've been using the AstoundStereo Expander for a while now. The latest version (2.0) seems to have addressed some of my initial concerns. I like the fact that it has a preamp feature. I tested a few songs with their earlier version that would occasionally have minor amounts of distortion. I was able to reduce the distortion by adjusting the effects slider to less. However, this is no longer an issue with the latest version. I was able to get it to work with Airtunes. However, you will have to use Airfoil by Rogue Amoeba to make this feature work. But once you do, you are no longer bound to just listening to iTunes-a definite plus! It sounds really good and has managed to wake up my speaker system! I was able to find this info tucked into the Expander's FAQ section, but only after contacting their tech support-friendly folks & very quick response, BTW. it would be helpful if they made this info a bit easier to find since this adds an extra star to this software, IMO. But I found it and it works! Only 4 stars for documentation since I had to hunt down how to make this feature work. Airtunes compatibility is a big bonus, too bad they don't make it obvious. Just be sure to download Soundflower (a freeware option with Airfoil) since this seems to be an essential component to this type of setup. I would still like to see an EQ option. I'm a bit picky about my music and like to tweak it so it sounds just right. But none the less, this product is extremely easy to use and most importantly, sounds great.

It changed the way I hear music. The best way to describe it is the song is a like a room, and you are sitting right in the middle of it.
Cons
You have to adjust the settings on some songs with more intricate instrumentation, but nothing that really bothers me.
Summary
If you want to change your mac into an IMAX, you NEED this plugin! It truly changes your speakers into a surround sound. It's a no-brainer for $20, but don't take my word for it ... get the free trial and see for yourself!
