Ever wanted to try oil painting but not had the equipment and been worried about the mess? By providing a set of painting and drawing tools that simulate familiar, real world tools ArtRage lets you try out a wide range of different artistic styles in a single, easy to use application.
ArtRage provides 20 painting tools that come with a wide range of settings and presets allowing you to create many more unique variants. The Oil Paint tool lets you smear and blend paint on the canvas, tracking the volume of paint and how wet it is so that strokes interact realistically with existing media. The Watercolor tool creates delicate blends and wet merged strokes as you paint. The Paint Tube and Palette Knife let you work with bold, thick pigment and heavy texture, and a variety of other painting and sketching tools complete the artistic toolkit. It's like working on a real canvas, there's no need to understand digital processes to get a realistic result.
Along with the natural painting tools ArtRage provides a range of utilities that make it easier to create artwork, including Rulers and Stencils, Tracing and Reference Images, Paint Symmetry, and many other systems that add a touch of digital convenience to the creative process without getting in the way.
What's new in this version: Version 4.0.3:

- Paint Symmetry: Use configurable axes of symmetry to create automatically mirrored strokes across the canvas as you work.

It has enough tools and features to enable the novice user to express an incredible range of artistic ideas. Young children can learn the basics easily and grow their own ideas.
Cons
The learning curve for advanced features is a bit much. But if one has the time to devote to learning via tutorial videos available on the web, not an issue.
Summary
This program has enough advanced features in it to accommodate most home users aside from perhaps professionals. The basics are easy to learn, allowing the user to create stunning artwork.

This is a great program. For 59 Dollars at the moment you get a complete toolkit for painting. For this money you could not even buy the basic colors and pens you need for real painting, not to mention brushes and canvas. This program is the one that simulates real painting the best of all programs I know. Of course it doesn`t have all features of Corel painter, but that makes it easy to use on the other hand, and you get results very fast. After a few minutes trying around you are already able to start painting almost like in real life.The metallic paint function is great. This is a pure PAINTING program, not a picture manipulation program like Photoshop. But combined with the free GIMP you have a complete painting and picture manipulation kit for under 60 dollars. You probably will not even be able to use all the possibilities you have with these two programs.
I mentioned before artrage could be a little bit slow on netbooks. That was because of a bad software configuration on my netbook. After I disabled the automatic translation program "lingoes" which was running in the background (causing no problems with other programs), artrage was no more slow at all. Now it is the fastest painting program I know, and it runs fast on an acer netbook with 1 GB memory.

This software is excellent bang for the buck. Most people can do everything with this they want to do. Few people need anything more fancy like corel or adobe. Even children can use this, but it takes a little time and experimentation to learn it.

It is alot like painting without the mess. The best part about it is that you can click on undo if you make a mistake.

I wish it had a wider variety of colors.

It is clear from all other comments: ArtRage is amazing! it is fun and also professional, it has lots of great tools and I specially like the glitter brush, version 2.5 is affordable and useful but if you are a pro ArtRage 3 is also out now, it has lots of new tools and new interface, currently four versions are available: free demo version, ArtRage2, ArtRage3 and ArtRage3 Pro, if you want it for fun go for free demo version or ArtRage2, and pro users can choose between ArtRage3 or ArtRage3 Pro. I think it worth every penny you spend :)

Extremely creative program for all artists. Works well on my mini dell netbook and my pc. No problems with the program. I am an artist and this program brings out the creative blocks when I need it and is a pleasure to use.

The only negative is that I immediately wanted to buy the full version right away and couldn't at the time.
