Mac OS 8.1 offers faster Java performance and tighter integration with Internet Explorer. However, you can still use the Web browser of your choice. Mac OS 8.1 supports the new Extended Volume Format for hard disks (also known as HFS+), an option for PowerPC users only. The Extended Volume Format optimizes the storage capacity of large hard disks by decreasing the minimum size of a single file. Existing hard disks formatted with Mac OS Standard Format, including 68K machines, will continue to function in and be supported by Mac OS 8.1. Among the many enhancements and bug fixes offered in this update, PC Exchange and Open Transport have been improved. Be sure to read the included documentation before installing.

I updated my OS 8.0 with no problems, BUT, before I installed it, I got major errors. I ended up re-installing my OS 8, then installing the update. After doing that, I didnt get any errors. My system was the Performa 5215CD. But, my Apple TV/Video system didnt work well, after you captured, the video would get off of the audio. Also, AppleShare, was VERY SLOW. I recommend updating to OS 8.1, then update EVERY AppleShare, and software you have.

Mac OS 8.1 is the latest version to use on 68k macs, which means the best choice for emulators (there's no PPC emulator for uindoze). If you like Mac but have to use PC and choose to emulate Mac, you'll be suprised with the speed and stability of the OS. Just if there were no bugs in emulators..

This will majorly improve Mac OS 8.0. 8.1 is more stable and contains support for extended hard drives. You may say this is the first step towards 8.5 and the newer generation of the Mac OS. However, if you don't have atleast 16 MB of Ram, you'd better stick with OS 7.x or upgrade!
