From Apple :

Macintosh users that have an internal Global Village modem in their computer should download this software update, which allows the modem to emit sound through the computers speaker. The models that this update effects are Performa 52xx, 53xx, 62xx, and 63xx. This new extension allows for 16-bit sound to be played through the speaker.
