      "Airport Express Not Supported"

      March 14, 2005   |   By crephoto

      Version: AirPort Monitor Utility 1.1b1

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
As of this version (1.1b1), Airport Monitor Utility does not support auto-discovery of the Airport Express. I ran the utility but my AX was not discovered. When I selected the Drop-down menu for basestation type, the only two options were "Snow" and "Extreme". I had to manually enter the AX IP address which is inconvenient since I have DHCP enabled and I had to check the DHCP table on the router through which my AX is connected to the internet. Once I input the IP address, it found the AX and I was able to collect all the information.

Nice program. Great for managing and checking our Airports. No problems running. Use iStumbler or the Airport Utility to check TCP/IP numbers. Good job. Would be nice if it would store Airport ID numbers and if you could open more than one window at a time. Not bad for $10!

      Version: AirPort Monitor Utility 1.0

      Summary

      ...compat.

The very first question asked by this software is what your Airport's IP address is. But if you're using the base station's built-in modem, you won't know this information (nor should you) because it changes each time you connect to the internet. Why Airport Monitor Utility relies on IP address to find the base station is a mystery, as no other utilities have trouble finding WAPs on their own--MacStumbler, KisMac, etc. Also, the incompatibility with older base stations is disappointing, as is the lack of compatibility with Jaguar (sure, I'm on Panther but a lot of other users aren't, and with good reason.) All in all I agree that this isn't quite ready for prime-time and probably should be considered a v0.8 release, not 1.0. I will, however, eagerly look for future improvements, as the concept has great merit.

      "Not Ready For Primetime!!"

This app just plain doesn't work. I had multiple crashes on authentication to website. I had trouble genie bottling the window; it would get stuck in the dock. I also was able to connect to my abs once.. and when connected, it did not list any wireless hosts (there were 3 on line). I like the concept of the app, however please don't release this for sale when it is so buggy.. perhaps a beta release?

Glad to see this utility. I was just needing this info and was dreading the thought of having to hack into my AEBS. Now I don't have to. Thanks!

"AirPort Monitor Utility Is Quite Useful"

      January 12, 2004   |   By edbravo_dotmac

      Version: AirPort Monitor Utility 1.0

      Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
So far using this the utility has been a pleasant experience.

I just used it to find the best location for my base station. I was not able to easily do this before. Also, I have friends over with G4 laptops right now. I can see their connected speeds, noise and signal strength in db's, very nice indeed, in the wireless page. Seeing this I just noticed one connection with a terrible connect rate of 36 for a 11G connection. We looked around and set "Use Interference Robustness" on his laptop, this cleared up the connection right away. I was not expecting such a dramatic change. The speed went to 54!

I can also see if anyone is grabbing my wireless. I find myself checking often now that I have eyes into the AirPort.

What to me needs work is the Help area, it has good info but it needs more. It does not let me cut and paste the data from the tables. I would like to see it update itself so I do not have to hit connect, but it is not that big of a deal.

A friend is using Mac OS X 10.2.6 (Jaguar). The app fires up then goes away. Reading the info on the app again the author does state it is for 10.3 (Panther) or higher. If this happens to you, now you know why.

For support so far the author has been responsive. I sent in my questions and recommendations and had a response within a few hours.

Overall I give it 4 stars.

Next, I will walk around my house and map the strengths. This will be fun!
