CNET Editors' review
We'd bet you know exactly how many doors and windows there are in your home, and whether each is properly secured. How about your Windows PC? It has doors and (small-w) windows too: they're called ports, and they're how the world gains access to your computer, your data, and your privacy. So, do you know how many ports your computer has, and where they are, and their status? Famatech's Advanced Port Scanner is a free tool that can help you answer those critical questions. It can scan all your ports or just those in ranges you define, and not just on your main PC but on all your networked computers. Advanced Port Scanner is easy enough for novices, thanks in part to a friendly Scan Wizard. We ran it in 64-bit Windows 7 SP1.
Advanced Port Scanner's installer created and even opened a Start Menu folder for the program, yet the folder was empty. However, we found the executable file and program data in Advanced Port Scanner's Program Files folder, along with its Compiled HTML Help file. We were able to open the Help file from the menu bar, but some users running 64-bit Windows systems may have trouble opening it due to a known issue with CHM files created for 32-bit Windows. The program's simple interface offers a default ports list as well as the ability to select IP and port ranges.
We clicked File and selected Advanced Port Scanner's Scan Wizard, which not only scans for open ports but can also identify the PCs on your LAN and whether any of them have open ports, too. This easy-to-use tool asked us for information such as our machine's speed and whether we planned to keep working during the scan. You can scan all your system's ports or just the standard ones. Scans can take time, so take yours, too. A tree view displayed all the IP addresses and open and closed ports for each PC on our LAN. Advanced Port Scanner's results can help you secure your PC and LAN.

"Crashes every time"
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
Have not been able to find a pro because it crashes.
Cons
I have not been able to run a scan because it crashes every time.
-
"***** PRODUCT!"
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
Fast but still not as fast as one on my ******* ipod...
Cons
Crashes, skips some computers, can crash your computer, bad interface, no support from dev...
Summary
I would give this -5 stars
-
"Highly Unstable and Unsupported by Developer"
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
If it worked, it would be a great app
Cons
It doesn't work (on any computer Vista x86/x64 or 7 x86/x64)
Summary
I have tried this on 4 different machines and it hasn't worked yet. The scanner crashes part of the way into the scan.
-
"Suspicious and constant crashing."
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
Scans with default setting.
Cons
Cannot change configuration. If I try to change it crashes. Quick heal email protection notified me that this app is trying to send emails. Without quick heal I wouldnt have known

"Constantly crashes"
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
When it works, it does exactly what it says on the tin.
Cons
Constantly crashes. Usually if you try a second scan of a full subnet. Often before you get the results of the first!
Summary
If it didn't crash nine times out of ten, it would be great!
-
"Does job reasonably well"
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
Small footprint, simple interface, easy to configure
Cons
Interface is a bit clunky, e.g. tab stops not well laid out. Also sometimes results were not consistent on consecutive runs, or with different port ranges set (it missed some open ports sometimes).
Summary
Not bad but I prefer using nmap now which seems to be rock solid
-
"Works well, but crashes"
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
For port ranges in the thousands, it works fine and works well
Cons
When I tried to scan the full range (0-65535) it kept on crashing. I need to find another program that doesn't crash on me (Win 7 Pro, x32, no memory or processor overload)
Summary
Free, simple interface, works well. Get it!
-
"I didn't like it"
Version: Advanced Port Scanner 1.3
Pros
Scanned some ports.
Cons
Couldn't get it to scan more than 67 default ports. It seemed to ignore my port ranges.
Summary
This one's a lot better than some of the others if only it's options worked. It's fast and has a decent UI.
