Adobe Reader 9.3.3

Tested spyware free

CNET editors' review

Reviewed by: CNET Staff on November 18, 2008

The new version of this indispensable product doesn't introduce revolutionary changes, but it doesn't have to. As the low-end PDF reader, it simply keeps up with Acrobat Professional and Standard. This release adds the ability to play back embedded multimedia files in MP3, QuickTime, Macromedia Flash, Real, and Windows Media formats, as well as to submit Adobe PDF forms. It also replaces some of the icons in the default interface with optional, dockable toolbars. You might as well install this now before a Web site you visit prompts you to download it, because you'll need it.

    Version: Adobe Reader 9.3.3

    "Usage issues and problems again"

    by ndlicht--2008 on August 4, 2010

Pros: OK so its a slight change

Cons: kills off familiar icons and structures

Summary: Every adobe update seems to need refreshing and undoes something I have gotten used to using. I am reluctant to update for that reason. Its not worth such small enhancements when they make familiar usage unrecognizable. Change for change sake isn't good change.

"Likely to crash your system. Avoid."

    by Pro-Techy on August 14, 2010

Pros: Who knows? Install fails and bombs out having messed about with your system.

Cons: The marketing people appear to have got their way with this one - non-standard download and lots of flashy gizmos during download which then fails to complete.
Adobe AIR a mandatory part of download; Installs various 'services'.... Avoid.

    Summary: A buggy marketeerikng piece of junk which clogs up your system and bears little resemblanced to the reader you might have expected to download - if indeed it manages to download at all. Does not use the standard 'file download' process that all other apps use but it's own flashy advertising gizmo which is a pain. Installs services which then execute who knows what;

Worth reading the user reviews bewfore you download.

My advice: Stick with version 8.

    by s-haigh911 on August 10, 2010

    Pros: free.
adobe is widely used on websites for organisations

Cons: downloaded this 3 times, each time I was unable to complete the registration form, then it crashed my netbook

"Yet another failed Adobe Installer... DLM NOT Wanted!!!"

    on August 31, 2010

Pros: Decent reader otherwise not impressed at all!

Cons: The idiotic Download Manager is REQUIRED to install Adobe Reader... Not impressed. I don't NEED or WANT yet another download manager to install ANY software. Drop the McAfee installer with it too! Geez!

Summary: I have written software for over 32 years. It simply isn't necessary to require a Download Manager to install a piece of software.

I don't like someone installing a Download Manager... Period.

Please just give us the ability to have a NON-Download Manager Version.

Adobe does some pretty nice stuff overall... but the Download Manager part frankly pisses me off every time.

I'm about ready just to DUMP all versions of EVERYTHING related to Adobe UNTIL they drop their infatuation with the unwanted and unnecessary Download Manager!

"Adobe Reader's gem, when it works. Bearcat to fix."

    by Nicholas-P-Heille on August 30, 2010

Pros: Everybody uses Adobe Reader. Is it because it is so good; or, ?

Cons: More than a few users of Adobe Reader have had issues with.

Summary: Adobe reader, when it works is a gem. When it fails to work, it is a bearcat to fix! As an alternative, I recommend FoxIt Reader, as a temp fix, or permanent replacement, if you finally give up on Adobe.

In fall of 2010, with Window 7 and a 64 bit machine, I had difficulty with an Adobe "automajic" update that required over four hours of system management to fix. Adobe's own web site reflect similar problems others have had ( http://forums.adobe.com/message/3046103 ). To uninstall Adobe Reader I used NoBeReader; and, with advice from Adobe (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408441.html ) had to jump through 25 hoops/steps to gain administrative authority, to remove an Adobe CMAP file. OUCH!

With limited sophistication, I expect many Adobe Reader users will give up on Adobe Reader's transparency when they hit the brick wall of Adobe's lack of transparency.

    GOOD LUCK Adobe.

    Version: Adobe Reader 9.3.3

    "Useful, but not great."

    by WSM7 on August 29, 2010

Pros: Useful if it is used only to read articles and other stuffs.
    Simple and easy to use.

Cons: If you need a PDF reader to do searches, reading many documents and references, this is not what you want. You'll need something like Foxit or NItro, with which you can highlight texts or make notes.

Summary: I'm using it because I'm used to for many years. But it isn't the best if you want anything more than just reading. I recommend Foxit.
