Editors' review

ACDSee 16 is the latest version of this pro-class photo editor and collection manager. It's compatible with previous ACD Systems releases and comes with a database upgrade wizard. ACDSee 16 continues to emphasize ease of use and customer service. It still makes it easy to post and share images online, but it adds new features like the Info Palette, which collects and displays image data in one convenient spot; the Reverse Geocode feature for adding geotags; the Lens Blur tool for creating realistic bokeh effects; and Tilt-Shift for transforming images into simulated miniature scale models. Extras include slideshow, wallpaper, and screen capture tools. ACDSee 16 isn't cheap, but it's affordable, especially compared to some of the competition, and you can try it free for 15 days.

Installing and setting up ACDSee 16 takes several steps, including choosing plug-ins. We could also choose whether to associate the program with all image formats or just unassociated ones, which let us try ACDSee 16 without changing our current settings. A Quick Start Guide toured the program's features and let us set our preferences. ACDSee 16's user interface is busy but not confusing, and it bears many features common to image editors, such as the navigation sidebar with a tree view on the left, with a similar on the right for Mode-specific features. ACDSee 16 is based around four Modes: Manage, View, Edit, and Online. Four large buttons in the upper-right corner accesses each Mode with a single click. New users will need to set up a database to store their images, but if you've got an existing ACD account, you can simply log in and run the database conversion wizard (we did; it's fast and easy). Once you've loaded an image, ACDSee 16 transitions seamlessly between Modes, so that we could go directly from viewing an image to editing it to posting it online.

ACDSee 16 has more features and power than most users need, but it's well within the means of serious amateurs and those with large collections, and a bargain among pro tools.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of ACDSee 16.1.88. The trial version is limited to 15 days.

    "Thanks for the virus."

    June 02, 2014   |   By JoeCool32

    Version: ACDSee 17 17.1.68

    Pros

I don't know. I uninstalled it as soon as my anti-virus software detected a virus or malware being installed, along with your software.

    Cons

It came with it's own virus.

    Summary

I had also tried to download a different photo editing software package that night, only to have it try to install a virus/malware, too.
    I won't be using cnet.downloads ever again.

    "Good. Could be better."

    May 26, 2014   |   By GreyClaw

    Version: ACDSee 17 17.1.68

    Pros

This (paid) version has been much more stable and noticeably more responsive than recent versions especially when parsing RAW images.

    Cons

Still too... desperate to be the "Jack of All trades", and still slow and prone to freezing/hanging.

    Summary

The amount of formats that are supported and the overall polish still the selling point and the reason I keep coming back. Been a customer since ver 2 and this (paid) version has been much more stable and responsive than the previous version that I had bought (ver. 12 and 15).

I find that the feature creep/bloat is the main annoyance for me and many other users. I have never wanted my image-organizer to play media files, or display font files, as I have other programs that perform those functions well.

Boot up is now about 16 sec--slow, but still much better than v.15 . That is while parsing My Pictures Library (which spans 2 external drives).

I would be exceeding happy with a stripped-down, we-just-organize-images "portable" version.

    Cons

    "Bad Upgrade Policy"

    September 26, 2012   |   By sblakeok

    Version: ACDSee 15 15.0.169

    Pros

None. There are free products that do much of what this program does.

    Cons

I purchased Version 14 and 15 days after I installed it, Version 15 came out. I requested a free upgrade since it had only been 15 days and they asked $19.99 for an upgrade. Customer service is via email and their automated response indicates it takes 2 to 3 days for a response.

    Summary

I feel it was unethical to sell a product when a new version was less than 30 days away. Most software companies gladly provide a free upgrade in cases like this.

"Seriously TICKED. Must Register Even to TRY!"

    July 26, 2012   |   By B00kWyrm

    Version: ACDSee 14 14.2.157.0

    Pros

I was unable to find any.

    Cons

Unable to even try the product without registering.
Not willing to register on a product that I am only trying.

    Summary

    This practice is very outdated.
Most publishers do not do this.
ACDSystems should wake up and join the 20th Century,
    Better yet join the 21st!
If your product is good, people WILL come back and register ...
WHEN the trial runs out... after all, by then they will have seen that they want it enough to buy it.
Until then, you don't need any of our personal information,
and we don't need your emails.
    I'll be looking elsewhere!

    "Better than nothing"

    October 12, 2011   |   By narnia

    Version: ACDSee 14 14.0.110.0

    Pros

This software was a good choise in the 90s. Now on you could find easier and better free software.

    Cons

Why had this company separated the software in 3 pieces (Photomanager, Photo Editor and Photo Slate), the answer is that will be much more expensive for you. Adobe Photoshop Essentials is lightyears better than this softwares together

    Summary

Don't buy it, it is unstable och stupid to register.
And it is not an easy one to work with.

"Its free, easy to use, safe and... free"

    September 23, 2011   |   By Bettyblaze

Version: ACDSee Photo Manager 12 12.0.344

    Pros

Easy to figure out, quick to install, no problems for me and does what it says it will do

    Cons

UI/Design looks more promising than features/product endgame. I don't remember exactly why I was disappointed. It looks promising till you realize there is key feature that got shafted. It's the apps equivalent of blue balls ( so im told)

    Summary

It has potential and the reason I tried it out was because I wanted a quick way of batch editing, but in the end, I ended up going back to photoshop, picasa and acd to cover all the repetitious actions of my project.
