Second Baptist Church was organized in 1854 and was originally named the African Baptist Church. Rev. T.J. Showers pastored the original nine organizational members. By 1926 the church had grown and moved to a structure on Kalamazoo Avenue, and there were about 100 families in the member ship at that time. The Church changed its name and began its association with The Chain Lake District. During the same time there was also a split in the membership and from this division the sister church Mt. Zion Baptist Church was organized.
