Parallax released the shareware version of Descent. It immediately soared to the top of the Top 100 Internet Game charts.
The full version of Descent was released to great sales and critical acclaim. It garnered numerous awards, including the PC Magazine Award for Technical Excellence, and PC Gamer's Editors' Choice (having earned a 96% rating, the second-highest rated ever awarded by PC Gamer). Descent quickly became the most popular multiplayer game on the internet.
,br> Descent 2 was released, as was the Playstation port of Descent. Descent 2 received great sales and acclaim. The most technologically-advanced title of its time, Descent 2 earned strong retail sales and became one of the most heavily OEM-bundled titles in history. It was one of the first titles to show off the full potential of hardware acceleration.
In 1996, by mutual agreement of its founders, Parallax split into two closely-affiliated companies, Volition Inc. and Outrage Entertainment. Volition continued Parallax's work on FreeSpace, an ambitious space action game with advanced mission structure and excellent hardware support.
In 1998, Volition released FreeSpace to strong sales and critical acclaim. It featured the most advanced technology and most powerful multiplayer of any space game at the time.
In 1999, Volition shipped FreeSpace 2 a month early, a feat unheard-of in an industry plagued by high-profile games that are late coming to market.
FreeSpace 2 received many industry awards, including Sim of the Year and Game of the Year honors from many well-respected industry news sources.
