New type of coronavirus from China, which has stirred the world community in recent weeks, could be transmitted to humans from a snake that ate an infected bat. So he established a genetic analysis conducted by Chinese scientists.

Earlier, the PRC authorities said that the source of infection was located in the wholesale market of Huanan in the densely populated city of Wuhan (Hubei Province): they could illegally trade animals, including snakes, bats, marmots, rabbits, and so on. The first cases of infection were detected precisely among people who were either sellers in this market or regular customers. The outlet was closed and disinfected on January 1, but the virus had already begun to spread and soon went beyond the PRC.

In a new study published in the Journal of Medical Virology, scientists say bats could be the primary source of 2019-nCoV: more precisely, a snake that previously ate an infected bat and then hit a person on the dining table. As the researchers explain, the transmission of the virus from animal to person is not something sensational and new: Ebola hemorrhagic fever and Zika virus are well-known examples of viruses that come to humans from animals.

In addition, experts found that 2019-nCoV belongs to the same virus family as SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome or SARS) and MERS-CoV (Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome): they are classified as zoonotic infections, then there are zero patients who have adopted them directly from certain animal species.
