Vim is a highly configurable text editor built to enable efficient text editing. It is an improved version of the vi editor distributed with most UNIX systems. Vim is often called a 'programmer's editor', and so useful for programming that many consider it an entire IDE. It's not just for programmers, though. Vim is perfect for all kinds of text editing, from composing e-mail to editing configuration files.
It is working. It gave me a chance and made me from beginner to a expert.
Cons
Some code that work on Unix may not working on this standalone.

Pros
it's very useful when edit configure file like boot.ini.
Cons
I like it.
Summary
As if boot.ini is readonly, edit with notepad you must set it to no read only and change the content and then change is to read only back. But with vim you only edit it and then type ":wq!".

Pros
Helps unix programmers to feel at home on Windows. Vim expands vi and even break some limitation of the original such as long line limit.
Cons
If you dont know vi, then you may have trouble. If you take time to learn and practice, you will soon find yourself wondering why you didn't use it sooner.

Pros
Vi is the text editor. Vim stands for vi improved and it is the text editor most people really use now when they say vi and was originally for UNIX but is available for most any OS.
Cons
From the Vim website:

Vim isn't an editor designed to hold its users' hands. It is a tool, the use of which must be learned.

Currently download.com has v6.4 but v7.0 is available from the vim website: vim.org
