Learning to type fast and accurately is something many users want to do, but few actually do! Apps like Typist can help. Designed to help Mac users learn to touch type by practicing keystrokes, all without looking at the keyboard, takes a bit of time but is made easier by this app. Typist installs quickly and easily.

The Typist interface is a window with a number of exercises listed. Complete them in order, practicing as you go, and before too long you stop the two-finger hunt-and-peck approach and use all your fingers, while avoiding looking at the keys directly. The exercises step you through the process of building muscle memory to guide your fingers to the correct keys, all based on relationships to the "rest" position. The only way to learn touch typing is to practice, and Typist helps you with nicely designed lessons that guide you, step by step, along that path.

Using Typist is easy. Actually applying the lessons you learn is harder. In the early weeks of learning touch typing you'll find it slower than your old approach, but as time goes by your speed increases dramatically. Don't expect the process to happen fast. When we learned to touch type it took months of repetitive action to train the fingers, but in the end it starts to come so naturally you don't think about it. Typist can help you get there, and since it's free all you need is the time and the inclination.

Developer's Description

Typist is a typing tutor, which helps you in learning touch typing. If you have never taken any lessons in typing before, please be patient. Typing is not difficult but it does take a lot of practice. Avoid the tendency to look down at your fingers while typing. This is a very bad habit and is hard to break later. If you have always used the hunt-and-peck method, you will have an even harder time keeping yourself from looking. Don't be surprised if you find touch typing slower than your old ways. It may be slower when you first start. But, touch typing is far faster once you get the hang of it.
