Editors' Review

by   / February 07, 2015

Telegram lives up to its promise of being the fastest messenger around and sports many remarkable features, such as group support for up to 200 people, cloud integration for history syncing across devices, and effortless media file sharing. All these, together with the smooth performance, solid encryption, and no ads/no subscription concept, make it an irresistible app.

Lightning-fast: Telegram's performance thoroughly impressed us: Messages are sent and received instantly, photos and other large media files can be shared in a matter of seconds, and the interface overall feels smooth and responsive, even when you're quickly switching between chat windows, participating in big group chats, or sending group broadcasts to up to 100 people.

Excellent cross-platform support: Storing chat history and media files in the cloud, Telegram supports all major mobile and desktop operating systems including Windows Mobile, Mac, and Linux. There are no cross-platform limitations, so you can share documents, music, photos, and videos of up to 1GB with anyone who uses the app, regardless of their OS or device type.

Highly secure: Telegram takes security more seriously than most other messengers we've tried so far, encrypting your messages in real time and allowing you to set up an account self-destruction process if you don't use the app for 1, 3, 6, or 12 months.

More interface customization options would be welcome: While the blue-white interface looks good and moves smoothly, being well-ordered and easy to use, with a features sidebar in the left-hand side of the screen and a thumb-friendly message composition button, you can only change the messaging window background and text size, not the font or color scheme.

Unappealing stickers: The stickers in this app are nothing but pictures of famous people; they feel impersonal and even intrusive. They don't convey emotion in the same way as WhatsApp stickers, for example.

Bottom Line

With its intuitive design, great security, impressive performance, and all-around convenience, Telegram looks like one of the top contenders for the title of best cross-platform chatting platform. You may not like the stickers, but otherwise everything about this app shines. If you enjoy chatting, you should definitely try it.

How can you tell if an Android app is safe?
