Didn't do what I expected!

It won't decrypt the movies! It just gives me a "Sorry, we can't do this" notice when I insert a DVD movie. Ugh! I wasted $60 on the download and softeware disk and didn't get what I needed! Does anyone have any decryption software suggestions to make this work? I'm on a Mac!

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />If you have used Toast, then Popcorn should have a familiar feel as the interface is similar. With video becoming more and more portable, this software is certainly helpful to convert that media. I took one of my DVDs that had several episodes of a show on it. I wanted to convert the episodes to video. Typically in some of the other conversion programs I have used, I had to select individual episodes to convert. This is not the case with Popcorn. I inserted my DVD into the drive, selected Popcorn as the application choice, selected my DVD, told the program I wanted it converted to AppleTV and pressed start. The program did the rest. The program also did a wonderful job of converting video to DVD. I had some home movies that I took with my Sony camcorder. I selected the file and selected the options to convert the file to DVD. The program gave me only three style of options for menus. This seemed to me a little limiting as other video programs have quite a few choices.The conversion process works great and the videos are in good quality for playback after conversion. Popcorn will remain on my computer as one of my favorite video converters. Just keep in mind that conversion times depend upon memory and processor speed.

However after my computer crashed six months later, Roxio would not allow me to download the software again. I wanted to use it on the same computer with the same license number. However, Roxio charges $5 for the ability to download the software again in the future (beyond three months) and I had not purchased this program. It seems insane and "dark ages" for a company to do this. It cost them nothing for us to download it from their site. And, as long as it is being used on the same computer or with the same license number, I can see no reason to charge the fee. I'd shop elsewhere.

I've tried several different files and the percent complete stays at 0 for hours and nothing every happens. I've rebooted, repaired permission, turned the Turbo.264 option off, and just about every other thing I can think of all with the same results. If you click STOP, then the program freezes and you have to Force-Quit. In fact, you can't quit without the force-quit. This is on a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11. Oh, and if you go to their site to check updates, you get the "Server is too busy" at all times. Terrible support, terrible product. I would not recommend this company any more.

I asked Roxio Support and their only reply was "You can not update or change the DivX package used by Popcorn." Rather unhelpful as far as I am concerned. I didn't ask them to do it right at this minute, but a little "we'll update it in a future update" would have been nice. Does it imply that they don;t care and they just won't update it?

- ...conversion is complicated<br />This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Roxio Popcorn 2.0 is a good program for compressing DVDs and burning DVDs. The iPod video conversion works well too if you don't mind waiting awhile. I have not tested the PSP conversion since I don't have a use for it. The DivX conversion setup however is too complex. In order to get the correct 16:9 widescreen ratio for DivX files you have to go to the Custom preferences and adjust the Advanced Settings. First enter the custom size: 640 x 360. This width size is also the largest width size Popcorn will allow for any file conversion. Second, enter in 60 for the top and bottom crop values. If you do not enter all these numbers, then the image for the DivX file will be stretched and distorted to fit a standard TV set.

The quality is so much better than Popcorn can manage, as is the conversion speed. Strange they sell this rubbish as Toast is such a great program. Mac Pro 2.66. 4MB.

Minor graphical interface changes, but same under the hood from what I can tell. Save your money if you have 1.5 or Toast7. You can use free products to rip to your ipod or edit video.

- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I bought Popcorn as a software download and got a version of the product that wasn't the latest patch (1.0.2) and I cannot download the update to 1.0.3 from Roxio's site. It's impossible to get support for this product. It's not listed in the support page, asking their automated web support result in the answer: "we can't answer questions about Popcorn" and there is no email contact for support. So I'm left with an unusable product. Waste of money. Try DVD2oneX2 instead.
