Pros
You will play this game for eons. It never gets old, and there's always another way you can try to win with a different species you create. (easy strategy cheat - use transport hulls to build carriers for your fighters early on to dominate, before you can develop that hull technology)
Cons
I blame this game in particular for a C in my junior year (in 1998) dynamics class. I just couldn't put it down! Some bugs were also fixed in the patch available. Also, the end scene sucks. You just win. ("You have conquered the galaxy"). yay.
Summary
Great game that relies on more than special effects to draw you in.

Game time runs at a superb pace in this game. <p> <p>The diplomatic relations with other empires were well done. <p> <p>The research system was enthralling. <p> <p>The ship designing features and the ability to create your own race were great fun.
Cons
While not terrible, the graphics are not exactly top notch.
