Editors' Review

For one-stop VPN service, NordVPN for Android does a nice job of offering all you need to make a private and secure VPN connection.

Pros

Privacy and logs: NordVPN said it doesn't log user online activity and doesn't monitor or gather private data, online activity, and browsing history. The independent VPN testing site That One Privacy Site gives NordVPN good marks for its logging and privacy practices. Be aware that using a VPN does not guarantee your Internet activities will be private. The Internet is full of stories about shady VPN providers making promises they don't always keep. If you pick a trustworthy VPN, however, you can keep your communications secure over a public network, get around geoblocking, and avoid Internet filtering and censorship.

Ease of use: The app does a nice job of visually displaying your server choices, either with a scrolling list or on a map.

Affordable: You can start with a free 7-day trial and then sign up for a monthly subscription for $11.99, 6 months for $41.99, or an annual subscription for $69.99 (or, at the time of this review, $47.99 with a "limited time offer"). It also has a 2-year plan for $79 and 3-year deal for $99 -- but not sure of the wisdom of betting on any technology being around three years out.

Servers around the globe: NordVPN has servers in nearly 60 countries in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, more than most of the trusted servers we've reviewed. The list doesn't display latency, however, which is handy when choosing where to connect.

Encryption: NordVPN uses the industry-standard 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption and OpenVPN by default to provide the VPN service. You can also pick another protocol if you have a specific need.

Cons

Promotional pricing a bit wonky: When you sign up, you're presented with a collection of slightly confusing promotional pricing choices. For example, one window says I can sign up for a 1-year plan for $69.99, a 51 percent savings from the regular price of $143.88. But the next window says I can sign up for an annual plan for $47.88, a 67 percent savings.

Bottom Line

NordVPN for Android does a nice job of offering all you need to connect to a private and secure VPN service. On the plus side, it offers an unusually large number of servers to connect to. Its promotional pricing is a bit confusing, on the down side.

What's new in version 3.5.3+playstore

* From now on, you can choose servers by city! We know how much you've been waiting for this. Because, well yeah, it matters - San Francisco or New York, Perth or Sydney.

* Lost? Never. The country pin on the map now gets highlighted to indicate an active VPN connection.

* A few tweaks here and there to make sure the app runs smoothly on Android P. This includes fixing the bug when the network exceptions in the auto-connect setting weren't working properly.
