Health Mate logs your activity and heart rate throughout the day to help you track your activity and fitness progress. It combines basic tracking with motivational and social tools in an attempt to get people up and moving.
Polished design: A company that also makes physical products with a very clear and clean design sensibility designed Health Mate. That style has carried over to their app, and the result is a very attractive looking application. It manages to appear uncluttered despite presenting you with a large amount of fitness data.
Challenge feature: Being able to challenge your friends to take more steps is a great feature to include in a fitness app. The psychology at work behind always having a workout buddy is sometimes difficult in today's world, but by including in-app challenges to friends, you can gain some of the motivational benefit without actually having your friend with you all day long.
Lots of upselling: The app is useful on its own, but it also seems largely designed to work as one continuous upsell. The company that makes Health Mate also has a number of hardware devices, including scales and wearables, that integrate with the app. The app sometimes feels like a constant attempt to encourage you to spend more money on the company's products.
Complex sign-up: You have to provide a lot of information, including your birthday, gender, and email address before you can log in to the app. The basic activity tracker feature could and should work without that, but the company doesn't want to let you see if you like the app before providing your personal information, which is a bit frustrating.
If you don't already have a fitness tracking application, Health Mate is a good option. It works well, and the ability to challenge your friends can make working out more fun.
