Remote monitoring fails miserably

Pros
The eight-channel 1080p HD system is easy to set up, and the motion-sensing DVR works as expected.
Cons
The mail failure is the iOS app for remote monitoring. (We haven't tried the Android app.) It forgets its connection with the DVR every time the app closes, such as when an app is pushed to the background while you use your iOS device for anything else. Even with an old iPad that is dedicated to the task of acting as a remote monitor, the app gets closed by automatic updates to the device, and then we have to go through the connections to the NightOwl all over again. Secondarily, there is no external connectivity to permit motion sense to trigger other events, such as doorbells, alarms, or lights. If this can be done via the USB port, the secret is not revealed in the user guides.
Summary
Don't buy this system if you care about remote monitoring. If all you want is an inexpensive DVR recording of activity within the cameras' coverage areas, then this will meet your need.
