There is no better way to encourage healthy living than to turn it into a competition. Keep track of your activity, share it with friends, and provide a real-time look at your GPS position as you walk around town and it becomes not only easier, but also more compelling to get out and walk. Map My Walk is a fantastic example of how to encourage healthy habits with an intuitive design and function-loaded app that manages not to get in its own way.
After installation, you'll need to register, either through Facebook or the app itself. It's not immediately apparent why this is necessary, though for sharing with friends or competing, it makes sense. Still, if you avoid sharing personal data with app developers, this may be a turn-off. The functionality, however, is very good. Upon registration, you are given a quick yet thorough tour of the app and can start your walk by pressing "Record." By entering your height and weight, you can get calorie burning information as well, though this can be skipped. As you record, the app will tell you when you've reached certain milestones and can play music in the background. All of your recorded times are saved and you can compete against yourself or others.
With additional features like routes, workouts, nutrition advice, friend-tracking, and the ability to share on Facebook or Twitter, Walk with Map My Walk is a fantastic GPS tracking app that makes it fun to go for a walk again. Whether you are overdue for a new workout routine or simply want an excuse to get out of the house, this is a fantastic fitness-oriented app.
