This is a Source Code DIY Compilation Version!
zunipus- Pros
- A useful free Open Source media player that allows you to play obscure media.
- Cons
- It's geekware! If you aren't a geek, you don't want to play with this version. Get an older version OR better yet MPlayer OSX Extended.
- Summary
- It's great this the MPlayer project lives on! It allows you to play a variety of media that you can't play otherwise except perhaps in VLC. It is well worth supporting. Unfortunately, the project doesn't go beyond providing source code. You have to compile it for Mac all by yourself, which can be very scary and is fraught with the usual minimal and obscure documentation, CLI typing, testing and patience. The README file included provides the bare bones to get you going. But if you haven't installed the latest Apple XCode and haven't compiled code before, you do NOT want to play in this sandbox. However, if you are a geekaholic, this is fun!

Talk about Old News

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />RC2? Release Candidate 2 is not available for the mac judging by the downloads listed. RC1 has been around for quite a number of months. Why is this download listed as a new version? There is nothing new here for Mac OSX - especially for Leopard users.
always worked very good for me

Subtitle font selection fails
adiseker- Pros
- Cons
- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />When I try to pick a font for subtitles, it gives me a limited choice of fonts from my system, far fewer than I have installed, and any font I pick fails. The error log says "unable to open Bitmap font", but none of the fonts that it lists are bitmap fonts. With no font selected, I don't see subtitles.
Stability?

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I've had issues playing back AVI media, particularly to the point where it has (on several occasions) stopped responding to inputs. It will still play the movie but not respond. It REALLY hates it when you use the timeline to click a starting point or scrub through the video. Also, it may be a nit-picky thing, but where's the "close window" command?? I felt prior versions were more stable.

The Best
NutMac- Pros
- Cons
- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Universal Binary - Excellent! My 20" iMac Core Duo thanks you. Although VLC has a larger following (at least among Mac users), I find MPlayer's UI to be far superior, with ever so useful arrow key for scrubbing/shuttling. Furthermore, its preferences are far better organized and logical and the UI is more QuickTime Player-like.
Happy

- Summary
- This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Upon attempting to use this to open several items I find this only to give sound and not video? A big disappointment to me as what others attempt to do this one does not save the day. So if windows media, quicktime, VLC, real player will not open do not expect this one to help. So this leaves you wondering what will open it? Even downloading free codec's does not help. Does anyone reading this have any suggestions? Are we the ones missing something valuable? I am sorry but I can only issue feedback that we tried MPlayer OSX but it failed to help! To the creators of this software can you give us any valuable information on what your player will do and will not do? Thank you!
